Morris Area Freewheelers 2nd Annual Revolutionary Ramble

The Morris Area Freewheelers 2nd Annual Revolutionary Ramble was held on June 12th, 2010. This is a time-lapse video of the first 2 hours of the 25 mile Route of the ride. As my mapquest directions had a confusing turn in them, I arrived just as it was starting. I forgot my water, to put air in my tires, and to eat anything, so at the the rest stop, you will see I spend an unusually long time to correct these problems. You can see me really quickly walking in front of the camera a couple of times. Next year, I should be able to complete the tour in 2 hours so the entire Route is in the video.

America’s Deadliest Highways

The other day I was  checking my e-mail and I see a link to the country’s most deadliest highways. Naturally, I wanted to see where New Jersey highways ranked compared to the rest of the country. The list starts with the 5 worst roads, of which #’s 1,3,4 & 5 are taken by California and Florida. But there at # 2 is New Jersey. So I am wondering what highway it is, the Parkway?, the Turnpike?, Route 80? Nope, none of those. It’s Route 76.

Second Season Premiere of “Jersey Shore” Tonight – Who Cares?

D-Bag TV

Do you really want to watch this travesty of television?  This disgrace of our popular culture?  This hair gel stain on our great state?  We of course do not watch but a lot of our fellow residents do.  Here are 10 things that you could do tonight instead that will not automatically lower you I.Q. by 40 points.

  • Head to Atlantic City for their “Jazz on the Beach” concert series.  Tonight jazz and traditional pop vocalist Ella Gahnt performs her tribute to the “Real Divas of Jazz” on the boardwalk between Mississippi & Georgia Avenues.
  • Summer is hot dog season!  Go to one of the many awesome hot dog joints across New Jersey such as Boulevard Drinks in Jersey City, Hiram’s in Fort Lee, Hot Dog Johnny’s in Butzville, or Charlie’s Pool Room in Alpha.
  • Try reading for a change!  Settle in with a new book like Brains: A Zombie Memoir by Robin Becker.
  • You look tired.  Get to sleep early and catch up on some zzzzzs.
  • Invite some friends over, crack open some beers, and watch the Yankees scalp the Indians.
  • Get the family together and dust off those bikes.  New Jersey is full of bike trails like the Saddle River Bike Path, the Cheesequake State Park path, and the Atlantic County Bikeway.
  • If you are like me your house could use some cleaning.  Get the vacuum, broom, and Swiffer and get to work!
  • Make some popcorn, dim the lights, and settle in with some DVDs just out this week including Clash of the Titans and the entire series of 21 Jump Street (you know you want to!).
  • Practice your Big Lebowski moves at the many bowling alleys that dot our state.  Bowling not your game?  Grab a cue and play a little 8 Ball at a pool hall or local bar.
  • Do Anything Else!!!

Be proud of our state and don’t give these poseurs the attention they crave.  The sooner the rating go down the sooner they will go away like a bad rash!

Former NJ Football Star Jack Tatum Dies

Today the sad news came that former Oakland Raider All Pro safety Jack Tatum died of a heart attack at the age of 61.  Nicknamed “The Assassin,” he was feared for the hard hitting style he showcased in the NFL and as an All American at Ohio State.  Unfortunately, he is best known for a hard hit against New England Patriot wide receiver Darryl Stingley in a preseason game in 1978.  That hit left Stingley paralyzed for the rest of his life.

I was a huge Tatum fan as a kid.   Growing up in the late 1970s I was drawn to the tough image Raiders like a moth to the flame.  Seeing Tatum, John Matuszak, Ted Hendricks, and that bald bad ass Otis Sistrunk crushing opposing offenses was a sight to behold.  Later I felt sorry that Tatum became known just for the Stingley incident.  He was never the same player after that.

Tatum grew up in Passaic, NJ.  My dad and his family also grew up here.  We eventually moved to Clifton but one of my uncles stayed in Passaic.  My cousin actually played with Tatum as a Passaic Indian.  He told me he was a mean, tough player even back in his high school days playing in Boverini Stadium.  Every year on Thanksgiving, Passaic plays it’s old rival the Clifton Mustangs.  My wife and I attended the 2008 Thanksgiving game in Passaic as Jack came back to have his #32 jersey retired.  It was Jack Tatum Day and I couldn’t miss that.  He seemed happy that day and that is how I want to remember him.  You can see some photos from that day below.

A Stroll Through Jersey City – The 2010 Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk

You’re bound to run into heat somewhere in the world if you plan an event at the end of July.  But, boy did Scott Kelby and his crew pick a scorcher of a day for the Eastern Seaboard to schedule his Third Annual Worldwide Photowalk.  The thermometer read almost 100 degrees and with the oppressive humidity, it felt more like 110.

For those unfamiliar with the photowalk concept, it’s when a group of photographers get together and shoot in one location for several hours, then share their results with the rest of the group online.  Scott Kelby, an internationally-known photographer, Photoshop expert and author/publisher of many books on the the subject, took this idea one step further by making it a worldwide event.  For three years now, photographers have joined groups all over the globe on a specified date to shared their resulting pictures both within their own group and with all the other groups on Flickr.com.  Contests are also incorporated into the Photowalk with individual group winners as well as overall winners chosen by Kelby, himself.

Movie Review on DVD – A Perfect Getaway

The movie A Perfect Getaway had me scratching my head after it was over.  They didn’t just do that, did they?  They couldn’t have.  That’s impossible!  Wait a minute!  Maybe it’s not impossible after all.  I need to see it again to make sure.  I need to see exactly what they did.  And I am going to take them to task on it.  And if they made any mistakes, any mistakes at all, they are in big trouble.  So I watched it again.  And then a third time.  And I have come to this conclusion: Yes, they did pull it off sucessfully, although a couple of things are borderline questionable.  Anyway, to see what I am talking about, watch this movie.  And when you are done, you are going to want to watch it again immediately.  Trust me.

Princeton’s ‘Dinky’ Train Could be Replaced By Bus Line

The Dinky Line which is 145 years old currently provides the shortest regularly scheduled commuter rail trip in America at 4 minutes and 47 seconds. The 2.7-mile train between Princeton Junction and Princeton University is in the line of fire to be replaced by commuter buses.

Legend has it that Albert Einstein enjoyed watching the Dinky and other Princeton Junction locomotives and, perhaps because of this, used trains as examples to illustrate his theory of relativity.

The proposal to replace the Dinky line with two bus lanes dedicated exclusively to rapid transit in Princeton Borough and Princeton Township is in the informational stage and would need the approval of both towns. Seems to us like a lot of worry over something that’s not even real yet.  But, a 145-year history is hard to ignore.
