A selection of events taking place in the Garden State this weekend.

The Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre is a one of the grandest surviving movie palaces, and now operates as a non-profit arts center. The appreciation and enjoyment of film is an important part of our mission, and each month we present a classic film weekend, in 35mm on our BIG 50ft wide-screen. Here’s what coming up this month:

  • On Friday September 24 at 8PM we will present “Peeping Tom” (1960) starring Carl Boeham and Moira Shearer. Directed by Michael Powell.
  • On Saturday, September 25 at 6PM we will screen “The Stranger” (1946) starring Orson Welles, Edward G. Robinson & Loretta Young. Directed by Orson Welles.
  • And on Saturday, September 25 at 8:20PM we will present “Charade” (1963) starring Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau and James Coburn. Directed by Stanley Donen.

Each screening is $6 for adults; $4 for seniors (65+) and children (12 & younger). Discounts available for multiple screenings.

We’re located at 54 Journal Square, Jersey City, New Jersey, just  minutes from Lower and Midtown Manhattan and Newark’s Penn Station by PATH subway; and minutes from the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, the NJ Turnpike, and Routes 3 as well as 1 & 9. Discount parking in Square Ramp Garage located behind the Theatre.

For more information go to www.loewsjersey.org or call (201) 798-6055.

Thanks for reading this post.

From the Loew’s Website, here’s a bit of history from this grand theatre.

The Loew’s Jersey opened its polished brass doors on September 28, 1929. Journal Square, Jersey City was a regional crossroads with a stop on the “Tubes” subway line that ran between New York and Newark; scores of regional bus and trolley lines also converged there. Two other theatres were already doing business in Journal Square, along with some of the area’s finest shops and restaurants.

New Jersey Blues & Jazz Festival

It’s all-star music in a creative setting—four sets of Blues & Jazz at the Backstage Jazz Club, a 230-seat club-style venue on stage at the State Theatre. This club is custom designed to give patrons an exclusive experience just inches away from the artists. The venue’s entrance and all accommodations are backstage. Note: the Backstage Jazz Club is a small venue, so order your tickets ASAP to enjoy this experience. Assigned table seating (4 seats to a table), general admission chair seating, and a fully-stocked bar are available.
