Movie Review – Devil

You may have written off M. Night Shyamalan. You may not be interested in seeing this movie based on his recent track record. But if you use that logic, you will miss a really good movie.

This movie is not on the same scale as his last few films. It is much more intimate, and plays out like an episode of the Twilight Zone. He didn’t direct the movie but is a writer/producer. The movie is directed by John Erick Dowdle, from the movie Quarantine.

This movie has a great premise : a group of people are trapped in an elevator and one of them is the devil.  The acting and pacing is terrific : the events unfold in almost real time. The balance with the characters that are not stuck in the elevator is also done very well. This movie has some good surprises and the plot developments of the story fit together like a puzzle. The movie is very well written and clever. There is a real gotcha moment that effectively got me, and usually that doesn’t happenis a well made suspense thriller.

One thing I kept wondering while watching the movie, is why M. Night Shyamalan didn’t direct it himself. It’s like he gave someone else a better script than the ones he has been writing for himself to direct. This movie is apparently the first of a series that will be made from the Night Chronicles. With this movie, they are off to a good start and Shyamalan’s reputation is in much better shape.
