Skyline is a movie about an alien invasion, and not the friendly type. What makes this film different from say, Independence Day, is that it is from the point of view of a small group of people held up in a fancy hotel, without any information from the outside world. They have no access to government or military knowledge as in other alien movies. This gives the film a more intimate feel. This movie is like one of those SyFy TV movies but about 100 times better. This is a exciting, entertaining, popcorn movie. The acting, cinematography, pacing, editing, special effects, and aliens are all very well done. The budget is low but the skill and effort are high.
The characterization is thin but adequate for this type of film. This movie knocks itself out to entertain you and it suceeds by putting so much effort into the aspects af filmmaking that don’t cost anything. Jarrod (Eric Balfour : 24) and his girlfriend visit his much more successful friend Terry (Donald Faison : Scrubs ) at a hotel for a business offer and a party. The always great David Zayas from Dexter plays the Hotel security. The morning after the party, the fun begins. The aliens have this really pretty blue light they shine on you, but if you look at it the results are anything but. The effect both physically and mentally of the blue light is one of the movies many well thought out details and good use of special effects.
The story is not complicated, but it does make sense, and the debate between the characters of what the best course of action to take is very realistic. When you have no knowledge of what is going on, no one is really right or wrong. I also liked that the movie keeps us guessing until the very end as to who will win, the aliens or us. This is a movie about survival and never giving up in the face of hopelessness. This movie is both horiffyingly intense and stunningly beautiful. The sountrack was absolutely amazing. I sat in the theater until the end of the credits, not only to see if there was anything after them, but also because I was enjoying the music so much. This movie is at times exhilirating, terrifying, but never boring, not for a second. I really enjoyed the experience of watching this movie and I appreciate what the filmmakers have accomplished.Copyright, You Don’t Know Jersey, LLC (2010-2012)
