YDKJ’s New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year!

We have three resolutions for next year:

1. Cover More South JerseyWe started with what we knew best and now we’re looking to expand on that.  Know any good spots down south we should check out?  Let us know!

2. Get Our Readers More InvolvedSome of our favorite sites have lots of reader participation and we’d like to try and get that going here, too.  We’re planning on doing some photowalks starting in the spring.  We might set up a hot dog tour in the summer.  And, who knows what else we’ll dream up!

3. More Weird NJ Debunked ArticlesThis is where we do the research that Weird NJ forgot to do.  We set it up this year and 2011 is our year to really get going on them.

So, what else would you like us to improve on?

Zinburger, Clifton – Review

A new burger place opened in Clifton recently so, of course, YDKJ was on it.

Zinburger - Clifton

Zinburger is on Route 3 in one of a new line of shopping places that we call “The Horrible Place.”  The area near Michael’s and Bed Bath and Beyond is the worst of them but the newer one down the street was only marginally better in terms of parking, layout and quantities of people.  Near Zinburger was a frozen yogurt place and a gym so there were a lot of teens milling around and gym rats trying to zoom into spots closest to the LA Fitness.  Once we found parking, we sat through a half hour wait for a table which was slightly tempered by free WiFi in the restaurant so we didn’t rack up too many data charges on our phones while we waited. All in all, not the greatest start to the experience.

Interior of Zinburger

Once we were seated, we were informed that Wednesday is Half Price Wine by the Bottle Day. The evening just got a little better!  We chose a Washington State Reisling called Snoqualmie because we’ve been to Snoqualmie and we like Reislings.  We were not disappointed.  It was very fruity and light which ended up going nicely with our burgers because it lent a high note to all the earthy cheese and beef flavors of the burgers.

Snoqualmie Reisling

We all ordered Zinburgers but with differing toppings.

I got it as listed on the menu with manchego cheese (a spanish hard cheese that had buttery and nutty flavors and stood up nicely to the beef), Zinfandel braised onions (yum!!), shredded lettuce and mayo.  I ordered it medium rare and it came out pretty rare which I like but made me a little worried about raw meat.  Luckily, nothing ended up being raw inside the burger and their ground-in-restaurant and never frozen beef proved to be delicious.  The buns were toasted and buttery which really made a nice holder for all that beef and the toppings.

Zinburger with Sweet Potato Fries

My dining companions chose a Zinburger with Pepper Jack cheese and those wonderful braised onions and another Zinburger with no cheese but with the onions and mayo.  Those two burgers were ordered medium which ended up being the best choice. Those burgers were nicely pink inside but held together better than my medium rare burger.  Very delicious!!

Sweet and white potato fries were sampled and approved.  Nice and crispy.  A Kit Kat Milkshake was also sampled and was so thick that it was practically just Kit Kat Ice Cream in a glass.  No problem with that!

Other menu items that we were interested in but didn’t try were the “Almost Famous” Vegetable Burger, an Ahi Sandwich and a Kobe Burger. The burger of the week also sounded good and was a beef burger with brie and a truffle aioli.

All in all, it was a very nice up-scale burger place.  I kind of wish that there was a wine pairing with each burger and the seating limitations should wind down once the “new”-ness of the restaurant wains. We’ll be returning in a few months for more half-price wine and to try some different burgers besides the namesake.

Week 16 Jets/Giants Review

Which Team is Worse?

NY Jets 34 Chicago Bears 38

In what was supposed to be a low scoring defensive game, the Jets and Bears put up a combined 72 points! This game had both teams going back to back in offense, but when the clock ran out, Da Bears came away with the victory.

Luckily for the J-E-T-S, the Jacksonville Jaguars lost in an upset to the Redskins, allowing the Jets to at least obtain a wild card spot in the playoffs. This Jets season just keeps getting more and more entertaining. They were supposed to be stuck in Chicago mourning a tough loss, but instead they were celebtrating making the playoffs again, putting the loss behind them.

Both Da Bears and Gang Green did not look to sharp at all Sunday. Both teams are built on defense and both teams let up over 30 points each, but both teams snuck into the playoffs and I tip my cap to both of them even though I think neither deserves to be there.

Win and We Are In?

NY Giants 17 Green Bay Packers 45

I am shaking while writing this as I am doing my best to erase this game from my memory. Even my wife, whom could give two sh$#s about sports, was screaming at the Giants during this game. In a “win and you’re in” game you would of thought this was a Week 17 game in which the Giants had already clinched the NFC East and had a first week bye and home field advantage. That is how sloppy the G-Men played. It looked like they didn’t even show up? How can you expect to win games when you turn the ball over all day?

I got to give credit to Green Bay. In a game they needed to win to stay alive for the playoffs, they showed up big time. Not that I am taking this to heart, but the Giants do not belong in the playoffs.

School Closed Today? See if a Museum is Open!

Blizzard warnings are in effect today so school is probably closed, right?

NJ.com ran this article yesterday about lots of different art shows that are closing soon.  So, why not call and see if you can get to a nearby museum or gallery and check out some art instead of hibernating in your house.  Use those SUVs, people!

We’re looking forward to checking out the Vogel collection in Montclair this week.

Mall of America Owners Look at Taking Over Xanadu

Color Catastrophe

It kind of makes perfect sense.  They know how to successfully run America’s biggest consumer shrine to overindulgence.  We have a shrine to New Jersey’s propensity for overindulgence and bad development deals.  So, why shouldn’t they come together in a deal that seems to make sense for both sides?

If we had to vote, we’d say Yes, Yes, Yes” to this marriage made in retail heaven.

Week 16 Jets/Giants Preview

IHavePrettyFeet.com

NY Jets vs. Chicago Bears, Soldier Field 1pm

It doesn’t get much harder for the Jets as Week 16 has them traveling to the Windy City to face a tough Bears defense. Luckily for the Jets, Da Bears have already clinched the NFC North and may rest some players. Either way, Gang Green needs to come out in full force once again and win a tough game on the road against yet another stingy defense.

As long as the Jets put Coach Ryan’s foot fetish behind them and focus on the game at hand, Week 16 should result in a victory for them. Putting pressure on Bears’ quarterback Jay Cutler and getting the Jets running game going are the keys to an easy victory.

Not Too Long Ago in Green Bay

NY Giants vs. Green Bay Packers, 4:15 pm Lambeau Field

With a Giants win they are in! The playoff hunt is in the picture for both teams in Sunday’s game in what promises to be a brisk day in Green Bay. The G-Men will be without wide receiver Steve Smith as he is out for the season. The Pack-a-Lackers as of right now will be with Aaron Rodgers, but he may want to rethink that as the Giants defense have sent 5 quarterbacks out of the game early this year with concussions, some of those quarterbacks have yet to return this season.

So look out Sunday, while you’re recovering from holiday festivities with family and friends, and watch both our teams travel to the NFC North to fight for their respective playoff spots. Both games will be cold, maybe even snowing. At least we get to snuggle up on the couch or bar, wherever you are, and watch some old school smash-mouth football the day after Christmas.

Happy Holidays!

Let’s Open Some Presents!!!!

from the YDKJ Staff

Christmas Eve – To Gift or Not To Gift

That is the question.  Growing up, our family always opened up our presents on Christmas.  Never before Christmas.  Us kids would go to sleep early on Christmas Eve in excruciating anticipation of the morning to follow.  We would wake up and rush down the stairs to open up all our presents in a mad fury.

As we got a little older and went to school we heard this strange custom some other families had.  Some of our friends would be allowed to open a gift or two on Christmas Eve!  Whoa…what?  Why weren’t we told of this??  Our parents were holding out on us.  All those years we could have been enjoying some toys a full 8 extra hours!  Didn’t really matter in the end.  Our parents would not be swayed.
