Voice Of The Bleachers

Philadelphia Phillies, 16-8

Weekly MVP Cole Hamels

Another dominating week for the Phillies as they started off a West Coast trip with a four game sweep of the San Diego Padres. It’s tough enough to get a three game sweep, but a four game sweep! That is impressive even against the lowest of teams, the Padres. What is even more impressive is that all four games were won by three runs or less. It wasn’t the hitting that won them the four games, but the dominant pitching. Wow, that is a shocker. Hamels, Halladay and Oswalt each got wins in San Diego. Good for Philly, but not so good for the Padres as they had to face all three of those pitchers. Some teams get lucky in a three game series and only have to see one or two of the three.

After San Diego, the Phillies traveled to the desert of Arizona to face some snakes in the Diamondbacks. The start of the series did not integrate with the four game sweep they just came off of in San Diego. The first two Arizona games were rough. Philadelphia got one hit by ex-Yankee great Ian Kennedy and had a semi-slugfest the next game with Oswalt getting rocked. Maybe Oswalt had his family in mind due to the tornadoes in the midwest as he has left the team for personal reasons to tend to the natural disaster that hit his family’s home.

But who would of thought the Phillies would of gotten swept themselves in Arizona? I am guessing less than 1% of the experts. Game 3 had Hamels on the mound as he improved to 3-1 on the season with the smackdown the Phillies offense put on Joe Saunders, who made the baseball look like a beach ball to hitters at the plate.

This week the Phillies put pitchers Joe Blanton and Jose Contreras on the disabled list.

Movie Review on DVD – Splice

Splice stars Adrien Brody as Clive Nicoli, Sarah Polley as Elsa Kast, and Delphine Chanéac as their creation. Clive and Elsa are a couple of scientists who decide to push the envelope of their experiments by mixing human and animal DNA. It is a mixture of science fiction and horror/suspense. Similar concepts have been explored, many times with silly B-grade horror movies. So does this movie fall into that trap or does it deliver?

Some Farmers’ Markets in NJ Are Open Earlier Than You’d Expect

Veggies Time!

We are not nicknamed the Garden State for nothing!  May sees a lot of farmers’ markets opening throughout the state and we couldn’t be more thrilled.  There is nothing like the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables available in New Jersey.  Tomatoes, corn, eggplant, carrots, strawberries, and peaches.  And that is just a start.  Sure it may be a little more expensive than the local supermarket but the food is fresher and you are helping our state’s  independent farmers.   Many farmers’ markets also have desserts, fresh meats, cheeses, flowers, and more.  So do yourself a favor, your mother was right!  Eat your fruits and veggies!!

Please see below for a list of markets that are either already open or opening in May.

Panasonic Receiving $102 Million Tax Credit For Moving 9 Miles From Secaucus to Newark

In addition to a $102.4 million tax credit from the state, Panasonic will receive incentives from Newark to move to the city from Secaucus in 2013.

The Japanese-based electronics giant’s decision to move its North American headquarters to Newark, Mayor Cory Booker said at a news conference yesterday, is a “game-changing moment” for the city. ”By far, this is the single greatest economic development accomplishment of my administration,” he said. “A company of this import has made the decision to come here is a sign that Newark has turned the corner, is standing strong and is looking boldly into what the future can bring.”

At first glance, it might not seem extraordinary that New Jersey is offering Panasonic $102 million in tax breaks to relocate its corporate headquarters to Newark. Even today, at a time of tight budgets and taxpayer fury over government spending, state economic development departments spend lavishly to lure companies from other states, the idea being that the influx of jobs will justify the cost. Kenneth Thomas, associate professor of political science at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, says states collectively spend more than $70 billion a year on such wooing.

What’s unusual in New Jersey’s case, though, is that Panasonic isn’t in another state. It’s in New Jersey, headquartered in Secaucus, nine miles from Newark. Taxpayers, in effect, will be giving Panasonic carfare of $10.6 million per mile to make the trip.

Jersey Shore a la Oscar Wilde

Check out these videos that Gothamist alerted us to from the lead actors of the Broadway hit The Importance of Being Earnest, Santino Fontana and David Furr.

They took poignant lines from Jersey Shore and acted them out, Oscar Wilde style.  They short videos were done for Playbill.com.  Part 5 is now up.

Pretty funny!
