Honoring Our Heroes

Day is done…
Gone the sun
From the lake…
From the hills…
From the sky.
All is well…
Safely rest
God is nigh.

Fading light….
Dims the sight
And a star….
Gems the sky….
Gleaming bright
From afar….
Drawing nigh
Falls the night.

Glendale Cemetery Beautifully Honors Veterans

Even though Memorial Day really honors only servicemen and servicewomen who were killed in action, all the veterans buried in the Essex County Veteran’s Cemetery are honored with a flag this weekend at the Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.  We’ve always thought this was a beautiful place to remember the war dead so we hope that you click through our photo essay and take time tomorrow to remember those military men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Movie Review – The Hangover Part II

If you have seen the first Hangover, then you have seen the second one… kind of. The Hangover Part II suffers from the Police Academy syndrome, in other words recycle the same jokes and situations in each film with a slightly different spin. This film is a little bit more creative in its new takes on material from the first film. It is like the writers made a checklist of elements of the first movie and made sure to go down the line and check every one of them off. Here is a list of some of the events in the first film that have direct parallels in the new one:

If you have seen both movies, simply skip to the end to see my list of similarities with SPOILERS from both movies.

SPOILERS from the first film, not the new movie.

Steve’s Burgers, Garfield – Review

Good things come in small packages.  Blink and you just might miss this wonderful burger joint as you are speeding along Route 46 in Garfield.

May is National Burger Month and we asked you to tell us about your favorite burger places around New Jersey.  Several votes came in for Steve’s Burgers in Garfield. We’d been here for hot dogs before and already knew that the dogs, fries and onion rings were fantastic.  So, if our readers are rating Steve’s Burgers as some of the best in the state, you know we had to go back!

We headed over on a steamy Friday night and upon opening the door found out why everyone was sitting inside and not at Steve’s many outdoor tables.  The AC was cranked and despite the amount of deep-frying and grilling that must have been going on in the back, it was crisp and cool inside.  Beautiful!

Steve and Steve, Jr., greeted us with a hearty welcome and were gracious in waiting for our order while we perused all the specials.

Voice Of The Bleachers

Weekly MVP Cliff Lee

Philadelphia Phillies, 31-19

The Phillies played one of the wackiest games in baseball history this week as their backup second baseman achieved a win on Wednesday night. The Phillies and the Reds went for a 19 inning romp and started running out of bench players, thus forcing manager Charlie Manuel to pitch his second basemen, Wilson Valdez. Valdez now has as many wins as St. Louis Cardinal’s ace Chris Carpenter for the year. Not bad for a infielder.

And with all that said, the Phillies keep on winning. this past week had them playing seven straight games at home in which they took two out of three in inter-league play against the Texas Rangers, then took three out of four against the Cincinnati Reds.

All star second baseman Chase Utley made his 2011 debut this week and his presence has already sparked the Phillies offense. The Phils are clicking on all cylinders right now and are still clearly the best baseball team out there.

Movie Review – Priest

Paul Bettany stars as one of the title characters, a warrior in a post-apocalyptic world, set in a future following many wars of humans vs. vampires. The Priests have special skills and abilities that were essential in winning the war against the vampires and keeping them in check. Now, there may be new threats on the horizon, but the leader of the church, Monsignor Orelas (Christopher Plummer) chooses to ignore them as to not cause a panic. The Priest gets a request for help from Hicks (Can Gigandet), a cowboy type character, after an attack and kidnapping by the vampires. So a rescue mission begins.
