What’s Fresh This Week at the Farmers’ Markets?

Each week, we get half of a share of organic veggies and fruit from a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group based in Westfield.  And, each week, we’re going to show you what we got.  It’s our way of showing you what New Jersey farmers are up to and what you should be able to find at your local farmers’ market this week.

This week our CSA share had romaine lettuce, Yukon Gold potatoes, an eggplant, green peppers, green apples, red onions, peaches and cucumbers.

The Third Annual YDKJ Hot Dog Tour – Maui’s Dog House, North Wildwood

If you’ve seen any of the Food Network shows about hot dogs, you’ve probably seen Maui’s Dog House in North Wildwood. We’ve been a few times and it’s consistently excellent. We went a few months ago so we’re cheating a little with the hot dog tour’s timing.  But, really, this place is so fun and different that we had to include a write-up of our visit while we’re doing the official Tour.

Just looking at these pictures (that you’ll see if you scroll down) makes me want to make the trip to North Wildwood tonight.  This, coming after we’ve been eating hot dogs for a few weeks now.  They are just that good.

Rossi’s Bar and Grille, Trenton – Review

National Burger Month was in May and after we reviewed quite a few burger joints that we knew about, we asked you to give us some other suggestions.  A few came in for Rossi’s Bar and Grille in Trenton so we recently found ourselves in Hamilton which is next door so we decided to give Rossi’s a try.

True to their reviews, Rossi’s had some really big burgers. They looked awesome when they arrived.  Unfortunately, they turned out to be a little dry.  Maybe they were having an off day?  We all ordered a burger, each with different topping combinations of cheese, bacon, peppers and onions, raw onion and lettuce and tomato.

Movie Review – Captain America : The First Avenger

Captain America is the fourth super-hero comic book film of the summer, and it is one of the best. I was extremely skeptical going in to this movie that Captain America would be one of the toughest characters to bring to the screen. But as a result of film-makers commitment to making a good alternate reality World War II movie and a dedication to being for the most part faithful to the comic they have crafted a great movie on the level of X-men : First Class. Better than Thor or Green Lantern, don’t miss this film as a result of being super-heroed out. It is a completely different movie from the other comic book movies this summer.

Jersey Shore – 27th NPS All-Women Lifeguard Tournament at Sandy Hook

There are a lot of misconceptions about the Jersey Shore, from the MTV show to various articles I have read. The Jersey Shore has many different faces and personalities. Here is one of them, from a beach that doesn’t get a lot of attention, Sandy Hook.

When you think of lifeguards, maybe you think of California or Florida. But how about New Jersey? Since 1985, The National Park Service has been holding the All-Women Lifeguard Tournament in Sandy Hook, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Here are some photos from this year’s tournament.

NJ Governor Christie Hospitalized Because Of Difficulty Breathing

Governor Christie was hospitalized after experiencing difficulty breathing which may have been related to his asthma, his office says.

Here’s a statement from Christie Press Secretary Michael Drewniak:
“Governor Christie was having difficulty breathing this morning and out of an abundance of caution he went to Somerset Medical Center to be checked out. In line with someone dealing with asthma, he is being given routine tests as a precautionary measure. The Governor is extremely grateful for the quality of care he is receiving this morning and has nothing but praise for the world-class doctors, nurses and staff.”

A source close to the governor confirms Christie has suffered from asthma for years and that “He carries an inhaler with him,”. He also noted that the governor’s weight doesn’t help his health issues

South Orange’s Tyler Wisler Impressing Judges on HGTV’s Design Star

Tyler Wisler

Do you watch Design Star on HGTV?  The show where interior designers compete for a chance of getting their own show?  You should.  There’s a New Jerseyan this season who is making some waves.  Tyler Wisler is a designer out of South Orange who is impressing the judges with some of his work so far this season.   Anyone who can make a couch of 400 water bottles has to have talent in my book.  He didn’t win for this liquid lounger but should have!

Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Kevin Spacey!

Spacey was born in South Orange and was the younger son of Kathleen Ann, a secretary, and Thomas Geoffrey Fowler, a technical writer and data consultant. He has two older siblings: a sister, Julie, and a brother, Randy. He attended Northridge Military Academy, Canoga Park High School (in tenth and eleventh grades), and then Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, where he graduated valedictorian of his class. At Chatsworth High, he starred in the school’s senior production of The Sound of Music, playing the part of Captain Georg von Trapp, opposite Mare Winningham’s character, Maria.

While in high school, he took on his paternal grandmother’s maiden name, “Spacey,” originally a Yorkshire name, as his acting surname. He tried being a stand-up comedian for several years, before attending the Julliard School in New York City, where he studied drama, between 1979 and 1981. During this time period, Spacey performed stand-up comedy in bowling alley talent contests.
