“How did I get here? Where the hell am I?”
Lead singer and guitarist Brian Sella sings these words in “Maps.” If this song is any indication, The Front Bottoms are on the threshold of one heck of a career. Do you like punk? More of a pop fan? What about indie-rock and folk? Mix all of the these genres together and you might get an idea of what The Front Bottoms sound like.
The Front Bottoms are a band out of Westwood who have been creating quite a buzz. Brian Sella and drummer Matt Uychich have been friends since grade school. This friendship really comes through in the music. You can tell they are having fun. After paying their dues playing all kinds of shows from basements in Bergen County to cafes and restaurants in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, it looks like all the hard work is about to pay off. They were recently signed to Bar/None Records, the well respected independent label out of Hoboken. Their self-titled debut album will be released on September 6th. Pick this up and you’ll be able to tell your friends you were into them before they were big. And trust me…they will be.
Still don’t believe me? Come out to Moe’s Southwest Grill in Mahwah this Saturday night and hear them for yourself. See below for more details.
The guys were nice enough to answer a few questions:
How did you guys meet?
We met in elementary school and became good friends, we went to the same middle school, and we graduated from the same high school. So we spent a ton of time growing up together.
How do you go about writing a song? Do you come up with the lyrics or music first?
When we write ours songs we keep it natural, always keeping things fun. Always good vibes. There’s no structure to how we write.
We go back and forth on having the lyrics first or having the music done before writing lyrics. The only thing that is consistent with our song writing is that Brian writes all the lyrics. Besides that no two songs in the end have formed the same way.
Great recent news. Your Bar/None debut comes out in September. Are you more nervous or excited about this opportunity?
Excited, we are super stoked to be working with a label like Bar/None. For us, we couldn’t have asked for a better label. We have made great friends in the short time we have been working with Bar/None and we look forward to everything that will come.
And the release, we really like the tunes on the album. As well as the artwork along with it. I think it came together very nicely. And we’re pumped to get it out to as many people that are willing to listen.
Will you be adding more tour dates in the fall and winter to promote the album?
Yes we will, a lot of awesome tour dates. Just nothing announced yet.
Do you like living and playing in New Jersey? Gonna stay in NJ when you make it big?
We actually love New Jersey. It’s the only place we both have ever lived.
We have traveled many times, but I’ve never thought that i should be living anywhere but in nj. I don’t know why that is. We call Jersey home. And I don’t think the front bottoms are going to be leaving new jersey to live somewhere else.
