We bought a share of organic veggies and fruit from a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group based in Westfield. Each week, we’re going to show you what we got. It’s our way of showing you what New Jersey farmers are up to and what you should be able to find at your local farmers’ market this week.
This week we got romaine lettuce, green and hot peppers, an eggplant, plum tomatoes, apples, peaches and ground cherries.
Never tried ground cherries?
Our Farmer John loves them so we’ve had them for several years from his CSA shares, at his farm dinners and at his booth at the Montclair Farmers Market. They are like honey-flavored pineapple grapes. Here’s what I’m going to do with them:
This is an old mennonite recipe from allrecipes.com that is really good.
2 1/2 cups ground cherries
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons water
1 (9 inch) pie shell
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons butter
Place in unbaked pie shell.
Mix brown sugar and 1 tablespoon flour and sprinkle over cherries.
Sprinkle water over top.
Mix together 3 tablespoons flour and 3 tablespoons sugar. Cut butter in until crumbly. Top cherry mixture with crumbs.
Bake in 425 degree F oven for 15 minutes, reduce temperature to 375 degrees F and continue to bake for 25 minutes.
