Shop Local, NJ! Downtown Summit

Welcome to the second installment in our series called Shop Local, NJ!  We’re planning on doing all our holiday shopping locally this year and we’re taking you with us.  We spent American Express’ Second Annual “Shop Local Saturday” in downtown Summit this year.  We bought several gifts for our families and had lots of fun browsing all the stores.  Read on to see where we went.

A sample of the great shops in downtown Summit

Buying gifts for a music fan, a runner and an outdoorsman and don’t want to hit the mall and the crowds?  Why not try Summit? We found this string of shops right next to each other. The Summit Running Company, Summit Ski & Sport and Scotti’s Record Shop will take care of lots of gifts on your list.  Not only does Summit have free customer parking in the garage behind the stores on Springfield Avenue, they also have plenty of street parking if you aren’t keen on garage parking and want to be close to specific stores.

Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Ed Harris!

Harris was born in Englewood and raised in Tenafly, the son of Margaret, a travel agent, and Robert L. He graduated from Tenafly High School in 1969, where he played on the football team, serving as the team’s captain in his senior year.

What’s Fresh This Week at the Farmers’ Markets?

We bought a share of organic veggies and fruit from a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group based in Westfield which we share with another family because it’s a LOT of food.  Each week, we’ve shown you what we got. This is the last week of the regular shares.  Next week, we have a “stock up” delivery for an extra charge where we’ll get lots of potatoes, carrots and squash. This series of posts was our way of showing you what New Jersey farmers were offering each week and what you should have been able to find at your local farmers’ market each week. There are still a few farmers markets open out there so here’s our last post for this year.

This week we got small lettuces, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, parsnips, carrots, baby spinach, butternut squash and Japanese sweet potatoes.

Week 12 – Jets, Giants & Eagles Preview

Jets vs. Bills Sunday 1:00 pm at the Meadowlands

Following a couple of losses, the Jets (5-5) go into tomorrow’s game against the other .500 team in their division, the Buffalo Bills. This game is like a playoff game because there is a good chance that the loser will not be going any further than the regular season this year. Even though the Jets are on a losing streak, they are the favorite to win.

Giants vs. Saints Monday 8:30 pm at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome

Last week, the Giants (6-4) blew a golden opportunity last week to keep ahead of Dallas and give themselves an excellent place in the standings. They lost to the Eagles, a team that everyone thought they would easily beat. This monday, they are the underdog to the New Orleans Saints.

Eagles vs. Patriots Sunday 4:15 at Lincoln Financial Field

As banged up as they are, the Eagles (4-6) somehow managed to beat the Giants last week, keeping their season alive by a thread. It just goes to show that on any given sunday anybody can beat anybody. Next up are the Patriots who are favored to win.

New Jersey Nets Fans, Basketball is Back!

Basketball is back. The players and owners have agreed to a tentative deal that would result in a 66 game season starting on Christmas day. I don’t know how I feel about this. As a New Jersey Nets fan, I kind of liked the idea that not having a season was one less thing I would have to worry about. It was a relief to know that I wouldn’t have to deal with the stress and disappointment of watching your team lose. I’m not the kind of person who gives up on a team I am a fan of, but I really don’t see much that the Nets can do to improve their fortunes this year. Their best bet I think is not to try to find free agents or new players but to just improve as a team and see what they can accomplish.

Movie Review – The Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn Part I

I went to see the first two Twilight movies because someone else wanted to go. Once I had seen the first two, I figured that I needed to see the rest so now I have seen all four. My feelings when going to the first film was that is was going to be some kind of torture. I braced myself for excessive corniness, melodrama and the general tone that I expected from a movie based on a series of books aimed at teenage girls.
