Well, not really. Rutgers does want to put them under tighter regulations, though.
Some newcomers to the grease truck arena (also known as Parking Lot 8 on the New Brunswick RU campus) have complained that they aren’t allowed to use the space designated for the food trucks. So, now Rutgers’ officials have been looking into the matter. Turns out the University is, in effect, subsidizing the grease trucks because the rent the trucks pay to be there isn’t enough to cover security, grease removal and electricity. Wait, the trucks don’t pay for their own electricity or garbage removal? No wonder they don’t want new people to come in, they’re getting a ridiculously great deal from Rutgers!
RU set up a committee with University staff and students to review the situation. Their recommendations are that the trucks must leave the lot every night to make sure they don’t fall under tighter “food court” guidelines, raise the rent and make them pay for grease removal. The new measures, if approved, should keep it fair for all the vendors and allow Rutgers to comply with the law.
So, fear not, RU and grease fans. The trucks aren’t leaving permanently. But, they might be changing the hours.
