The Descendants stars George Clooney as a Husband and Father whose life gets turned upside down when his wife gets injured in a boating accident. Already under the pressure of having to deal with being the trustee in charge of deciding what to do with a valuable piece of land his family has owned for generations, he is now saddled with the task of raising his two daughters. Not an easy task since his wife had been doing most of the parenting. But what he finds out next shatters the world as he knows it and the journey he must take to find answers is heartbreaking and surprising.

As the mysteries unfold surrounding his wife and he becomes a detective with the help of his oldest daughter, the movie takes twists and turns that are unexpected but totally believable. And we meet a terrific cast of characters that enhance the story at each development.

But George Clooney is the star if this movie. He responds to the avalanche of situations that his character is put through with a wide variety of emotions, none of which are overdone. This performance deserves an Oscar nomination.

The plot of the film is masterful in the way that it introduces some outrageous revelations but avoids cliches at every turn. The characters are deeper and more couple than they may look at first glance.  The gamut of emotions that this film runs through up to it’s final conclusion develop a true arc and an emotional experience that is a testament to life, human nature and how people forgive one another. This is one of the best movies of the year.
