Website Jersey Bites Aims To Fight Hunger With 3SquareDeals Program

Our friends at Jersey Bites, the go-to site for New Jersey foodies, have launched a new program designed to fight hunger throughout our state.  It is called 3SquareDeals and works with restaurants in New Jersey who will offer deals on the site and via daily emails.  You purchase the meal by clicking a “Buy Now” link, then print a voucher to take to the restaurant.  It is that easy.  According to the 3SquareDeals site “After we split the total revenue from the deal with the merchant, 3SquareDeals will donate 10 percent of its revenue to the FoodBanks.”  The program will benefit three organizations; Food Bank of South Jersey, Community FoodBank of New Jersey, and The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Four New Jersey Players in Super Bowl

Tim Farrell/The Star-Ledger

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz is by far the hottest story of this year’s Super Bowl.  Especially in New Jersey.  The Paterson native has virtually taken over the sports pages.  His rise from the tough streets of Paterson to the biggest sports stage is becoming quite well known.  He even took over Times Square a few days ago to show off his salsa dance moves that he busts out every time he scores a touchdown.

The Star Ledger has had some nice articles this football season about Victor’s Paterson days and his father’s death in 2007. Cruz went to Paterson Catholic where he showed himself to be star material but all the recruiters said he was too small.  He went to Division 1-AA University of Massachusetts where he struggled academically and went undrafted after graduation.  Cruz’s father, Mike Walker, had been Victor’s guiding light throughout his life, coaching him in football and pushing him to excel.  Walker was a Paterson firefighter who was rising through the ranks of the PFD when he broke his neck in a car accident while Victor was at UMass.  After the accident, a series of bad turns ended up with Cruz’s father dying 13 months later, alone in Passaic.  Of course, it’s hard not to think that his father is somewhere up there beaming down at his son’s accomplishments on the field this year.

But, there are three other New Jersey natives playing in the Super Bowl that you should know about, too!

Movie Review – Haywire

Haywire stars Gina Carano as a kick ass action hero in an espionage thriller. Think of it as Bourne Ultimatum with a female lead. The movie co-stars Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton and Michael Fassbender in supporting roles.

Sharky’s Wings and Raw Bar, Clifton – Review

A lot of the time, when people think of the Super Bowl and food, they think of wings.  Because we like to get in the spirit of football and eating, we recently tried Sharky’s Wings and Raw Bar in Clifton because we’d heard that they were some of the best wings around.

I felt the “hot”-sauced wings could have been hotter but another diner thought they were adequately hot.  Well, I do know that as I get older, my tolerance for spicy food has gone up and I can eat hotter and hotter things without wincing.  So, maybe they were hot enough and it’s just my old taste buds.  Despite our differing opinions on the heat level of the hot sauce, we all agreed that they were some really good wings. They have lots of different flavors of sauce, too, that we’re looking forward to trying more of:  Mild, Med, Hot, Extra Hot, ON FIRE, BBQ, Teriyaki, Maryland, Blackened, Ceasar, Honey Mustard and Oriental.
