The Oscar Nominations were announced today. I was happy to see that my favorites in each of the 4 major categories were nominated.

Best Picture

“The Artist”
“The Descendants”
“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”
“Hugo”
“Midnight in Paris”
“The Help”
“Moneyball”
“War Horse”
“The Tree of Life”

My pick for best picture is ‘Midnight in Paris’. A funny and philosophical movie that takes you along on a fantasy and shows insight into how we view the past as well as how we live in the present. I also wouldn’t mind seeing The Descendants win, a great film that encompasses anguish, anger, confusion and forgiveness in a masterful way.

Best Actor
Demian Bichir, “A Better Life”
George Clooney, “The Descendants”
Jean Dujardin, “The Artist”
Gary Oldman, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”
Brad Pitt, “Moneyball”

My pick for best actor is George Clooney. He is at the heart of ‘The Descendants’ and everything that happens revolves around him.

Best Actress
Glenn Close, “Albert Nobbs”
Viola Davis, “The Help”
Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”
Meryl Streep, “The Iron Lady”
Michelle Williams, “My Week With Marilyn”

My pick for best actress is Rooney Mara. It is amazing how you feel about this character in the closing scene considering what comes before. The transition of this character from beginning to end and complexity that it involves is an accomplishment

Best Director
Woody Allen, “Midnight in Paris”
Michel Hazanavicius, “The Artist”
Terrence Malick, “The Tree of Life”
Alexander Payne, “The Descendants”
Martin Scorsese, “Hugo

My pick for best Director is Woody Allen for ‘Midnight in Paris’, a movie that has scenes and dialog that I will never forget.

Check back to see my favorites in more categories next week
