Movie Review – Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

This movie has great acting, amazing cinematography and meticulous set design. The problem is that it is an incomprehensible mess.

There is no way to follow this movie except in dribs and drabs of 5 or 10 minutes at a time. You never really understand people’s motives, who is good or bad or why they are doing what they are doing. This is the Transformers of the independent movie scene.

When I got home, just to make sure I wasn’t crazy or that I hadn’t missed something I went online to research the film. I discovered that the movie is based on a book. Maybe the movie makes sense if you have read the book, but then there should’ve a disclaimer telling you not to see the movie unless you have read it.

I came across many positive reviews which mention that  the film doesn’t make sense. Some of them really love the movie even though they can’t follow the story. This really confuses me. Movies are first and foremost about storytelling. Yes, there were some mesmerizing scenes and really amazing acting but there is no investment in the characters when you do not know what is going on.

I want to see the movie again as I feel I would probably understand a lot more with a second viewing having sat through it once already and at least having that background to apply to the characters this time around. If you have read the book or if you feel you can appreciate the good aspects of the movie, then by all means give it a shot, but good luck understanding what’s going on.
