Stunning news out of Trenton this morning. After concluding legislative business for the evening, Republican leader of the New Jersey Assembly, Assemblyman Alex DeCroce (R-Morris) collapsed around 11 p.m. last night and died before help could arrive. The Trentonian, this morning, is reporting that he died of a heart attack. Assemblyman Herb Conaway, the only physician in the Assembly, rushed to his aid but was too late. DeCroce lived in Parsippany-Troy Hills and served parts of Morris and Passaic Counties in the Assembly since 1989; later becoming the Republican leader in 2003.
Governor Christie was at home preparing for his State of the State address which was to be delivered today but has now been postponed. Christie rushed back to the capital around midnight and was seen breaking down, according to Yahoo! News, while embracing several legislative leaders. Yahoo! quotes him saying, “Tonight I lost a dear friend, colleague and mentor. He helped to give me my start in elective politics in Morris County in 1993. He was one of the most kind, considerate and trustworthy people I have ever had the pleasure to know. This is an enormous loss for our state and for me personally.”
Swearing-in ceremonies for new Assembly members and the State of the State address scheduled for today have been either scaled back or cancelled due to the shocking and sudden loss of DeCroce.
