Update: Unfortunately, Jersey Joint has closed. It’s tough out there for people trying to offer great food at reasonable prices!
What kind of outfit uses a toll road sign as inspiration for a logo? Wait… don’t answer that.
The coolest and most hip outfits use a toll road as inspiration for a logo, right?
We’ve been keeping an eye on the development of this restaurant ever since the signs went up looking like the Turnpike symbol. Since we are toll road logo brethren, we knew we’d have to get on this as soon as it opened. Last week, we finally noticed that they were serving customers so we checked it out. We knew this was our kind of place when we saw the menu is modeled after a New Jersey Turnpike toll ticket!
At first, we were skeptical of a place that serves burgers, hot dogs and pizza. When restaurants try to take on too many things that need special attention, things all usually come out being rather mediocre.
We’re happy to report that this is decidedly NOT the case at the Jersey Joint in Nutley.
We tried all three of the items that gave us pause and all passed our inspection and taste buds with flying colors with the standouts being the burgers and the pizza.
The Jersey Joint burger comes with JJ’s original sauce which we were told has cherry peppers and tomato in it. Clearly there were more ingredients that they weren’t telling us about based on the color of the sauce you can see on the burger above… but we wouldn’t expect any less. What it did give the burger was a bold, spicy kick that wasn’t assaulting like pepper flakes can be. Just a smooth even heat that really brought the burger to a new level of taste. The patty was very very beefy tasting. Everything about this burger says bold and we liked it! All the burgers (all the sandwiches, in fact) came on a nice big potato roll.
You can also see in the picture above the hot dog and boardwalk fries we ordered. The hot dog arrived deep-fried and Ripper-style. How did they know that’s what we like best? They are taking their Jersey name seriously by going with the deep-fried dogs. The dog was a nice size and competed perfectly with the big potato roll. The fries were nice and crispy outside and had a good amount of soft potato left inside each fry.
The JJ Margarita pizza was outstanding. The dough was equally soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Not too thin, it stood up to the toppings and didn’t flop over when we picked up a slice. Granted, these are 9″ personal pizzas so there shouldn’t be too much flop anyway. But, the sauce and cheese were nice and fresh tasting and the basil just the right amount—not over-powering but not absent, either.
Our server let us know that Jersey Joint is planning on having a Grand Opening celebration as soon as a few final punchlist items fall into place. We’ll definitely be attending and getting more of their really good, family-friendly food. And, we’ll be sure to let you know when the big party will be so you can join us!
