The First Four Days of New Jersey Natives in the 2012 Summer Olympics – What’s Happened So Far

Day Five is underway in London so I thought I’d see how our New Jersey Olympians are doing so far.

We’ve gotten two silver medals so far.  Yay!  Cullen Jones won his as part of the 4x100m Freestyle relay team on July 30th.  And, Rebecca Soni got her silver in the 100m Breaststroke also on the 30th.  It was certainly a good day for the NJ swimmers on Monday!

There are quite a few people who are in ongoing team events.  The women’s field hockey team members, Michelle Vittese and Rachel Dawson, are currently ranked fourth in their group and are looking toward the semifinals on August 8th and medal games on August 10th.  Women’s soccer members, Christie Rampone, Carli Lloyd, Heather O’Reilly and Tobin Heath, won their group on July 31st with a 1-0 win over North Korea.  Carli Lloyd scored a goal in the first two of three games so far. Asjha Jones and the women’s basketball team is currently ranked second in their group.

Several Olympians had some early disappointments but are still in another event later in the Games.  Cullen Jones may have won a silver already but he also didn’t make the finals for the 100m freestyle swim.  He will swim on August 2nd and 3rd in the 50m freestyle.  Maya Lawrence lost her quest for an individual medal in fencing’s epee event but will be on the epee team competing on August 4th.  Matthew Emmons didn’t get through qualification for the 10m air rifle on July 30th but he’ll compete in the 50m three position event on August 6th.

Unfortunately, for some of the New Jerseyans, their Olympic dreams are through for 2012.  Tennis player, Christina McHale, lost in the first round to Ana Ivanovic.  Nick Delpopolo, competing at the 73kg weight class in Judo, lost in repechage getting into the semifinals on July 30th.  And, Steve Kasprzyk helped his men’s eights team row to a fourth place finish early this morning.

All in all, we’ve been doing pretty well as New Jerseyans in this summer Olympics.  Keep rooting for the home team, readers, and we’re sure to rack up a few more medals!
