You never know when you’re going to run into some good Jersey folks. We happened to do just that this past weekend at the International Restaurant and Foodservice Show of New York. The big, red New Jersey on the label caught our eyes as we walked through the aisles taking a break from meeting with clients from our day job.
We chatted with creators Carlos Vega and his wife Connie of Jersey Italian Gravy while we tasted a sample and ended up getting to take a jar home with us. We’re here to tell you, you’ve got to try it! It’s made with just five ingredients: tomatoes, onions, olive oil, salt and cane sugar. That means it tastes just like “an August Jersey tomato,” according to co-founder Connie. There’s no spices or preservatives to take away from the fresh, natural ingredients. We’re sold. No spices or additives also means that you can use this as a base to create any sauce you want. Go ahead and add herbs, meats, veggies, whatever you feel like.
The gravy started out as a recipe from a restaurant in Guttenburg and it was so popular that the owners decided to bottle it. We’re glad they did. We always love to come across local, small businesses that have a great product. We even love the label so much we are going to keep the jar for a makeshift vase!
