The other day I was online and I saw a headline that said “Christie cleared in bridge scandal”. I thought that this meant that something conclusive had happened. Upon reading the actual article, that didn’t turn out to be the case at all.
The article showed a clip from a press conference that showed a man in a suit basically saying that there had been an investigation and the results were that the Governor had been cleared of all charges. What actually happened was that our Governor spent 1 million dollars of our tax money to hire his own lawyer to say that he is innocent. Wait…what?
If a politician is under investigation for doing something corrupt, then the investigators have to be either neutral or have a vested interest to actually find the information that would incriminate him if it exists. If the politician want’s to try to defend himself with his own money then that of course should be out of his own pocket. Any investigation conducted by a lawyer and team that the politician himself hired is obviously completely invalid and the fact that he used taxpayer money is frankly illegal.
This is in no way specific to our Governor. Pretty much any politician would behave the same way. There are plenty of other politicians that have done this kind of thing in the past and will keep doing so. It’s become common practice in our completely broken political system. And nothing will change unless we elect politicians that will actually fix things and set them right.
