We recently had pizza at Kinchley’s Tavern with the Rock N Roll HiFives where they told us all about their up-coming Spring Break tour. Suddenly, it dawned on us…. maybe they would write a tour diary for You Don’t Know Jersey! It’s almost as exciting as being able to go on tour with them. Here’s the fourth installment, written by singer Eilee.
After a night of rocking we woke up in our RV in front of Mike Slawter’s house. In got up at 8 and I went on a walk with mom and Ziggy. We looked at the neighborhood talking about the cute houses and beautiful flowers. Once everyone was up, we piled into Mikes’s car and went into town. Our first stop was Krispy Kreme.
I got one glazed donut and one Oreo donut. They were both delicious, however the glazed was outstanding because they make them right there in the store and it was nice and warm. After we ate our donuts and drank our coffee we got back in the car and drove to Old Salem.
The town was so beautiful. There were old buildings that were so simple, yet so pretty. Since it was Monday most of the stores were closed, but we were able to go into a cute shop (where we bought an ornament) and a bakery (where we bought sugar cake, which is a bread with sugar cinnamon and butter!!!). We then went to a Moravian graveyard. Here all of the graves are the same, because Moravians believe nobody should have a smaller or bigger stone then somebody else, we are all equally important. We went to another graveyard that was next to the Moravian one. Here we saw where the Hanes family (underwater company) are buried. After this we walked to Salem College, which is an all girls college. From the few buildings I saw the architecture was amazing and the brickwork was beautiful. After walking around we went downtown and got lunch at Mary’s gourmet dinner.
I ordered a salad with squash, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers. My mom got a side of grits, so of course I stole some. The food and atmosphere was great! We walked in the downtown area a little bit. We went to a park where there were murals and giant art sculptures all over. Then we went back to Mike’s house and our dog Ziggy played with his dog Marley. We packed the RV up and headed back on the road. We were off to Chapel Hill (my favorite town in North Carolina). I spent the drive to Chapel Hill, which was about an hour and a half reading, listening to music, and sneezing (allergy season). I’m reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower; it is a great read! Also my two favorite bands to listen to on this tour have been A Giant Dog and The Regrettes. A Giant Dog’s album Pile is awesome and so is the Regrettes album Feel Your Feelings Fool! Both bands are female fronted and are super fun. We pulled in to Chapel Hill to our friends Mikey and Emily’s house. Mikey’s sister and her family were there as well which was awesome. Mikey was making pasta and sauce/gravy with beef, sausage and meatballs. After catching up with everyone we all sat down to eat an amazing meal. Later Evren and I, as well and Mikey’s niece and nephew (Izzie and Lance) played football in the yard. I took a shower to get all of the pollen out of my hair and then everyone watched Jeopardy together. Soon we all went to bed. Evren and I slept in the basement and mom and dad slept in the RV. Mikey’s house by the way is pretty incredible. In the morning we woke up bright and early at 8:00 am. We had coffee and then after everyone was ready we went to Merritt’s.
Merritt’s is a breakfast and lunch BLT (bacon lettuce and tomato) place in Chapel Hill. Their sandwiches are so delicious I crave them all the time. I ordered a BLT with egg on white toast. It was exactly as I remembered. Warm and juicy with a nice crunch. It was so beautiful this morning so we all ate outside. Outside of Merritt’s there is a bean bag toss game. Lance, Izzy, Evren and I all played together and we had a blast. Lance and Izzy have a younger sister who is 2. She is so cute and so funny. When we got back to Mike and Emily’s house Mikey was just coming back from the airport with Emily who was in Philadelphia visiting her family. We were all excited to see her (especially Ziggy)! We gave them their Christmas gifts, Girl Scout cookies, and Wawa coffee. We all relaxed for a little while and started getting ready to leave to go to Wilmington to play our show tonight at Reggies. We left and now I am currently in the RV sitting at the table with Ziggy writing this journal. I’m so excited to play tonight and stay in Wilmington. If you’re reading this thanks Mike Slawter and the family for the show and bringing us around Winston Salem. Mikey and Emily thanks for dinner and having us!!! Alexis, Micheal, Izzy, Lance, and Lucia you guys rock and I’m having so much fun spending time with you guys. See y’all on Wednesday for the Durham Bulls game. Thanks You Don’t Know Jersey for letting us post our journals on your site!!!
