One of our favorite New Jersey bands, The Front Bottoms, played the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival on Sunday. It was a beautiful afternoon and we enjoyed the festival and rocked out to the Front Bottoms’ 45 minute set. This was their last local appearance before heading out on a short U.K. tour. Here are some shots from the set. Good luck in England!

It’s National Burger Month! Where Should We Go?
May is many things. The heart of spring. My wife’s birthday (can’t forget that). And, holidays Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day which lead to the unofficial kickoff of summer, Memorial Day.
What a lot of people don’t realize and what may be the most important thing of all… it’s also National Burger Month!
The SmashBurger above is one of our favorites. But, we know there are good burgers out there that we haven’t tried yet. So, come on readers, where should we go this month??

Share on FacebookTomorrow is Record Store Day – Putting the Needle on the Wax
Tomorrow is the Fifth Annual Record Store Day. A virtual 24 hour celebration of the local record store. The place where you can thumb through hundreds, or thousands, of glorious wax discs. Albums where you can actually see the cover art instead of a thumbnail. Ever buy an album just because of the awesome cover? The brick and mortar store where you can ask an owner or salesperson suggestions of good local bands or cool imports that have just come in. Sure it’s easy to hop on iTunes and download a digital copy in a few minutes. But it won’t sound as good as a record. You’ll also be missing out on a great experience.
You can visit the official Record Store Day website here. Here you can find information on all the special releases that day, in-store performances, contests and more. Click here for a list of New Jersey record stores that are participating.

Winter at the Jersey Shore – Fort Hancock at Sandy Hook
We love summers at the Jersey Shore but we also think winter is a great time to visit. The beaches and boardwalks take on a calm and reflective nature. The hustle and bustle of the boardwalk is still a few months away. The beaches almost barren. We decided to do a series of photo essays.
When one thinks of Sandy Hook one imagines the sand and ocean, the coves of Sandy Hook Bay, bike paths and, of course, the nude sunbathers of Gunnison Beach. But go a little further north and treat yourself to a visit to Fort Hancock, the former US Army military installation. From 1895 until 1974 it protected New York Harbor. Walking along among the old concrete barriers and now cracking and peeling buildings in winter when there are not many people about one can almost hear the gun fire and soldiers practicing their marching.

Trudging through the dark in a world gone wrong – “Shackled and Drawn”
Bruce Springsteen’s 17th studio album, Wrecking Ball, finds The Boss not very happy with the state of things in America. We had a taste of this when Bruce released the single “We Take Care Of Our Own” back in January. Many people missed the irony of that song as they did “Born in the USA” in the 80s. The songs that follow here hammer the point home that we are in for a dark ride. Bruce sings of fat cats, marauders and robber barons. The downtrodden in these songs are pissed off and blame the 1% for their fates. In fact they are angry enough in “Easy Money” to pick up a Smith & Wesson .38 to get a little of that money back. However all is not lost There is some hope in the despair.

If you listen close you can almost hear the surf, the sea gulls, and the hubbub on the boardwalk. Before you know it summer will be here. And if there is one thing about summer in our state that people are opinionated about it is their favorite beach. The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium is now giving you a chance to let your vote count in their 5th Annual New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches Poll. There are three categories you can vote in – “Family Vacation”, “Day Trips”, and “Ecotourism”. Simply click on the category, hit “Click here to cast your vote!” link, select your beach and vote. It’s that simple.
In addition to voting for your favorite beach there is also a New Jersey Coastal Issues Poll that you can take and select what issue you think will have the biggest impact on the future of coastal New Jersey. This also gives you the chance to win one of four Jersey Coast Prize Packages that will include merchandise, gift certificates and coupons for restaurants and iconic shore eateries, amusement parks, winery tour passes and more.
