Weekly MVP Ivan Nova
NY Yankees, 39-28
I guess it took a brutal sweep from the Red Sox for the Yankees to get back on track. After the Red Sox sweep, the Tribe came into town and the Yanks put on an old school a%$ whooping. One must blame the Indians though for firing the Yankees up. After Boston played bean ball (yes! I used Boston and bean in the same sentence) with the Yankee batters, hitting five of them in three days, the Indians followed suit and started beaning the Yankees Friday night! Not good for Cleveland as the Yankees just took off from there. With a long four game series, the Yanks won the first three, only losing the fourth game 1-0.
Next came in the Rangers, and as hot as they have been, I would have bet the Rangers would of taken two out of three games, especially with all the injuries the Yankees have. But of course that is not what happened. The Yankees showed some revenge for getting knocked out of the playoffs last year by Texas by putting on a home run brigade and sweeping the three game series in the Bronx. Very impressive Yanks, very impressive.
Injuries have started to plague the Yanks this week. Bartolo Colon hit the DL with a strain, Jeter messed up his calf and hit the DL, and Russell Martin almost hit the DL with a back strain, but has resumed playing baseball.

Philadelphia Phillies, 37-26

- Weekly MVP Ryan Howard
The Phillies started off last week with the Battle of PA, as they took on the Pittsburgh Pirates, and lost! In the Battle of PA, the lowly Bucs prevailed! But, we all know who REALLY is the better team. The Phillies once again have a completely healthy hitting lineup. The lineup they drew in spring training is finally the one on the field. It took them 2.5 months but it finally happened. We shall see if that is a good thing or a bad thing since the young kids who were filling in for the injured stars are part of the reason why the Phillies are ranked as the best team in baseball right now.
After dropping two out of three in Eastern PA, the Phillies came home and took two out of three to the visiting Dodgers. Even with a scorching Matt Kemp and a good pitching performance from the Dodger’s pitchers, the Phils managed to win the three game series. So are the Phillies really the best team in baseball, or is luck just on their side as they continue to eeeek out wins?

NY Yankees, 31-23

- Weekly MVP Mark Teixeira
It is now June and the Yankees are still in first place, proving the doubters wrong that Boston would have a 15 game lead by now. After dropping their first two games of the week in Seattle, the Yankee bats came alive to take the last game of the series and then travel to Oakland where they brought out the brooms and swept the A’s. And ironically as the Yanks swept the A’s, Boston was swept at home by the White Sox, bringing the surging Yank’s into first place in the American League East.
Mariano Rivera recorded his first save in three weeks against Oakland. And, who told Mark Teixeira that Seattle is a pitchers ballpark? He smacked the ball all over—and out of—the field. Derek Jeter is getting closer and closer to getting to 3,000 hits and some analysts are predicting he will reach that historic milestone at home against Colorado in a few weeks. No other Yankee has gotten 3,000 hits in their career. Nobody is predicting Jeter will pass Pete Rose’s 4,000 hits, but he is slowly creeping up there.

Weekly MVP Cliff Lee
Philadelphia Phillies, 31-19
The Phillies played one of the wackiest games in baseball history this week as their backup second baseman achieved a win on Wednesday night. The Phillies and the Reds went for a 19 inning romp and started running out of bench players, thus forcing manager Charlie Manuel to pitch his second basemen, Wilson Valdez. Valdez now has as many wins as St. Louis Cardinal’s ace Chris Carpenter for the year. Not bad for a infielder.
And with all that said, the Phillies keep on winning. this past week had them playing seven straight games at home in which they took two out of three in inter-league play against the Texas Rangers, then took three out of four against the Cincinnati Reds.
All star second baseman Chase Utley made his 2011 debut this week and his presence has already sparked the Phillies offense. The Phils are clicking on all cylinders right now and are still clearly the best baseball team out there.

Mets Weekly MVP KRod (again)
NY Mets, 21-22
The Amazing’s keep continuing to amaze me. With key injury’s to David Wright and Ike Davis, the Mets continue to keep winning. As of today, they are only one game below .500! Last week started off with an away series at Houston, in which the Mets won two out of three. A two game home series against the Marlins turned into a one game series due to this enormous amount of rain we have been getting, and the Mets lost, but by only one point. Next came in the Nationals for a two game series, and the Mets won both of those games!
The real test is this weekend against the Bronx Bombers at Yankee Stadium. Can the injury plagued Mets win a series against a “real” team. I mean Houston and Washington are MLB ballclubs, but ummm, yeah we know how good they really are. Can the Amazing’s put up a fight with a playoff contender? The battle for NY begins Friday night in the Bronx!

Philadelphia Phillies, 24-12

Weekly MVP Kyle Kendrick
Even after dropping two out of three to the divisional rival Braves, the Phil’s still remain a dominant force in the National League, if not THE dominant force in all of baseball. After a three series loss to Atlanta, they turned around and won two out of three in Florida.
What is more impressing is that the Phillies are doing it with two of their star players on the disabled list in Roy Oswalt and Chase Utley, and another top player in Raul Ibanez not hitting the ball at all. Roy Halladay took the mound in Florida and got the loss, but Kyle Kendrick and Joe Blanton both left Florida with wins. That my friend is how good TEAMS win. They do not have to rely on the ace of the staff to win every time they take the mound.

NY Yankees, 17-12

Weekly MVP Curtis Granderson
The Yankees seem to be coasting and there is only one way to coast, downhill! After opening up the weekend by taking two out of three at home against Toronto, the Yanks went into Detroit and dropped three out of four. There is something missing with these Yanks. It is called consistency. With a makeshift starting rotation and a lineup consisting of half the players bound for the hall of fame, the Yanks can not seem to get into a groove. Although the starting pitching is actually exceeding expectations, the hitters rely to much on the long ball. Homeruns may win you some games, but constantly waiting for a three run homerun is what has the Yanks slipping backwards, fast.
This week, third baseman Eric Chavez hit the DL with a fractured toe. Pitcher Kevin Millwood opted out of his minor league contract and backup catcher Fransisco Cervelli was recalled from AAA.

Philadelphia Phillies, 16-8

Weekly MVP Cole Hamels
Another dominating week for the Phillies as they started off a West Coast trip with a four game sweep of the San Diego Padres. It’s tough enough to get a three game sweep, but a four game sweep! That is impressive even against the lowest of teams, the Padres. What is even more impressive is that all four games were won by three runs or less. It wasn’t the hitting that won them the four games, but the dominant pitching. Wow, that is a shocker. Hamels, Halladay and Oswalt each got wins in San Diego. Good for Philly, but not so good for the Padres as they had to face all three of those pitchers. Some teams get lucky in a three game series and only have to see one or two of the three.
After San Diego, the Phillies traveled to the desert of Arizona to face some snakes in the Diamondbacks. The start of the series did not integrate with the four game sweep they just came off of in San Diego. The first two Arizona games were rough. Philadelphia got one hit by ex-Yankee great Ian Kennedy and had a semi-slugfest the next game with Oswalt getting rocked. Maybe Oswalt had his family in mind due to the tornadoes in the midwest as he has left the team for personal reasons to tend to the natural disaster that hit his family’s home.
But who would of thought the Phillies would of gotten swept themselves in Arizona? I am guessing less than 1% of the experts. Game 3 had Hamels on the mound as he improved to 3-1 on the season with the smackdown the Phillies offense put on Joe Saunders, who made the baseball look like a beach ball to hitters at the plate.
This week the Phillies put pitchers Joe Blanton and Jose Contreras on the disabled list.

Weekly MVP Bartolo Colon
NY Yankees 10-6
Another impressive week for the Bronx Bombers as they won a three game home series against Texas and split a two game road series against the Blue Jays. This week had the Yanks receive surprise quality starts from former Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon and former ace Freddy Garcia. Though no one should really be surprised, these two guys pitched lights out so far.
Kudos for Cashman for once again finding lightning in a bottle. Did anyone expect anything different? Cashman is the master at making low risk, high reward signings and so far the two pitchers above are bringing in high rewards. The main question, though, is can they keep it up?

NY Yankees — 7-4

Weekly MVP A.J. Burnett
A Beantown road trip and a home stand against The Birds kept the Yanks cold and wet as they hung around this not so beautiful east coast weather. The trip to Bawwwston gave the Red Sox the only two wins they have this season as the Yanks dropped two out of three at Fenway park. But as bad as the Sox are right now, did you really expect them to play bad against the rival Yanks? I am thrilled that the Yanks left the bean-eating town with at least one win.
With an off day on Monday, the dirty bird Orioles decided to fly in on Tuesday with their new pilot Buck Showalter. Older Yankee fans may remember Showalter as the Yankees manager in the early 1990′s, but with our lovely weather this week, Buck’s return was delayed until Wednesday. With a three game series turning into a two game series, even the magic of Buck couldn’t help the Orioles as they were swept at Yankee Stadium. Wednesday had the Yanks up on the Orioles early leading to an easy victory and Thursday the Yanks had to fight back from a 0-5 hole to end the night with a pie in the face ala Nick Swisher’s walk off sac fly in the bottom of the 10th.
Read about the Mets’ and Phillies’ weeks after the break.
