Date Announced for the 5th Annual New Jersey Zombie Walk

It’s almost hard to believe the undead have been descending on the town of Asbury Park for 4 years already.  And the mayhem will continue.  A date has just been announced for the 5th Annual New Jersey Zombie Walk.  On October 6th, 2012 the dead will again walk the earth when the shore town comes under attack.  Details are to follow but it is never too late to start planning exactly what kind of zombie you will be.  We have gone a couple of years and can tell you that it is a blast.  So use your brains before they get eaten and get cracking!

Upcoming Event – Asbury Park – 10th Annual Garden State Film Festival – March 22-25 2012

The Garden State Film Festival celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year.

The Garden State Film Festival is a celebration of the independent film genre. It is a showcase and forum where local and other independent filmmakers can exhibit their work. It was also created to pay tribute to New Jersey’s legacy as the birthplace of the American filmmaking industry in Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park laboratories where he invented the first film cameras and projectors, to Fort Lee, where the original studios were founded. Shop Local, NJ! Downtown Asbury Park

Welcome to the fourth installment in our series called Shop Local, NJ!  We’re doing all our holiday shopping locally this year and we’re taking you with us. We’re almost done shopping and we’ve really enjoyed every town that we’ve visited so far.  Asbury Park, though, has a special vibe that just connects with me on a personal level.  I remember hearing my great-grandmother talk about escaping the heat of NYC and taking my grandma down to Asbury every summer to walk the promenade and swim in the great big woolen swimsuits of the era. My grandma was sad about what had happened to Asbury Park in the 60s and 70s and she’d be thrilled with the way it’s being revitalized now.

The last few times we’ve been in Asbury Park, we were dressed as zombies for the Annual New Jersey Zombie Walk.  Shelter Home, Robert Legere Home, The Store by the Shore, re|BEARTH and all the other great shopping that’s along Bangs and Cookman Avenues aren’t places we could visit as zombies.  Luckily, for us, we weren’t wearing zombie make-up and clothes this weekend so we could pop in and discover what makes downtown Asbury Park an awesome shopping destination.

Lots of stores had Tillie items that you can pick up for people on your holiday gift list who love Asbury Park.  You know who Tillie is, right?  He’s the grinning face you used to see on the sides of the Palace Amusements building.  One of the Tillie faces was saved by concerned citizens when the building was demolished several years ago. Now, Asbury Park has basically made him the city mascot.

One of the stores that had Tillie-themed goods was Shelter Home.  As soon as we walked in we knew this would be a cool store.  Modern and fun, everywhere we looked we saw awesome stuff.

Check out the pillows above and the paperweights and magnets below, all from Shelter Home.

Their whole store was actually filled with gifts that would have been perfect for us.  Are you reading this family?  Shop in Asbury Park or in their online store! They have lots of Jonathan Adler pottery, Anna and Alessi kitchenware and really cool holiday items also by Alessi.  Honestly, I’m not joking.  I want the whole store in my house, now.  We even got to meet Diego and Lucia, the owners’ two beautiful standard poodles.

The Undead Seek Brains at Fourth Annual Zombie Walk in Asbury Park

Zombies!!

This past weekend the undead descended upon Asbury Park once again for the 4th Annual NJ Zombie Walk. Last year the Walk made the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest gathering of zombies with over 4,000 walking dead participants. Guinness wasn’t on hand for this one but thousands came anyway.  This year’s events included the Convention Hall with vendors, performers and photographers.

Got brains? Once again zombies from all over will soon be invading Asbury Park. The 2011 New Jersey Zombie Walk will take place Saturday October 22nd at 5:00 PM. Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Bud Abbott!

Abbott was born in Asbury Park into a show business family. His parents worked for the Barnum and Bailey Circus: his mother, Rae, was a bareback rider and his father, Harry, was an advance man. Abbott dropped out of school as a child and began working at Coney Island. When Abbott was 16, his father, now an employee of the Columbia Burlesque Wheel, installed him in the box office of the Casino Theater in Brooklyn. Eventually, Abbott began putting together touring burlesque shows. In 1918, he married Betty Smith, a burlesque dancer and comedienne. Shortly after his marriage, Abbott and his new wife began producing a vaudeville “tab show” called Broadway Flashes. This show toured on the Gus Sun Vaudeville Circuit.

Tattoo You! Visionary Tattoo Arts Festival, Asbury Park – Photos and Review

Asbury Park held its second annual Visionary Tattoo Expo at the Convention Center on the boardwalk July 29-31. Happy Birthday, New Jersey Natives Steve Forbes and Wendy Williams!

On the surface of things, you couldn’t imagine a more different couple of people.  An African-American woman who’s brash radio and television personality has rocketed her to stardom and a white male whose family fortune skyrocketed his name into the public’s eye via magazine publishing and political aspirations.

However, both are famous for speaking their mind, even when their opinions aren’t the most popular. And, they both sought the spotlight from an early age. So maybe they aren’t so different after all.
