Birders Are in Heaven in Washington Township

Honk if you love this goose!

A goose species that’s normally found in Greenland, Iceland and Norway has made it to Washington Township and bird watchers are thrilled about it.

The pink-footed goose has never been seen before in New Jersey and so far they’ve already stayed for a few days.  They’re hanging out in Bergen County around Schlegel Lake.

Birders from as far as Cape May and Philadephia were on hand when The Record was there chatting with the birds’ fans.

Xanadu May Be Revived…Why??

Color Catastrophe

Two developers are interested in reviving the Xanadu, oh wait that name is banned, I mean “Meadowlands” disaster.  Why?  From its opening in the 70s the Meadowlands has always been considered bad planning but who knew it could get worse?   My 6 year old niece builds her Legos with a better layout than the geniuses that designed this complex.  And who is the Mensa member that picked the 1970s style façade of Xanadu, especially the ski ramp?  Am I the only one that gets the gag reflex when I drive by?  Can you imagine what the rest of the country will think when they see that hideous ramp jutting into the sky as they show it on television during the Super Bowl in 2014?  Jimmy Hoffa must be spinning in his old Giant Stadium end zone grave.  And don’t get me started on the traffic.  Let’s be honest.  This is just going to be a big, ugly mall when it opens.  Lots of soulless stores and garish advertising with people walking around like the zombies in Dawn of the Dead.  Maybe they can get Snookie to cut the ribbon when it opens?

Sotto Zero, North Arlington – Review

image

Warm Summer Evening, Cool Yummy Gelato

It was hot and humid tonight and the YDKJ sweet tooth was calling out for frozen treats.  We immediately headed over to Caffè Gelateria Sotto Zero in North Arlington.  Wow, we were impressed!

The location couldn’t be nicer, right on Ridge Road with lots of indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of parking.  The interior walls are coated in a cool blue paint for an igloo-like feeling, according to their website. A penguin mascot, who’s also in the logo, greets you from the counter when you enter.

Bergen County officials are pushing a $200 million project to relieve the infamous Route 17 bottleneck.  One more lane in each direction for two miles between Route 4 and Route 80 will take land from 55 property owners (some of them completely overtaken) and will replace six bridges.

New Jersey Choral Society Concert

We have been attending the NJCS concerts for a few years now and we think that last Saturday’s concert was the best one yet.

They always put a really great Christmas concert on but this spring’s concert was beautiful and filled with special music and guests.

Giant Stadium Takedown

The old Giant Stadium is just about history.  While driving on Route 3 this morning I was hit by the fact that this part of New Jersey is just about gone.   What I was looking at actually made me nostalgic.  It brought back memories of all the Giant and Jet games I’ve been to over the years with family and friends.  And of course there was that Hitmen game of the ill fated XFL.  I saw all kinds of concerts here; Springsteen, U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Amnesty International, and the Grateful Dead.  My wife and I were lucky enough to see the Giants play the Chargers last fall.  Sitting in the seats that day we did not think that would be our last time in the Stadium.  Probably better that way.  Share your memories.

School Bus Hi-jinx

A school bus driver mistakenly began to take some kids to Great Adventure instead of to their school in Ridgefield Park yesterday.  What followed is everything that is wrong with kids today.  Why did these kids complain?  Kids want to go to school?  Back in my day we would never have spoken up.  Kids today are wimps!!
