Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Ali Larter!

Ali Larter was born in Cherry Hill today in 1976.

Larter is the daughter of Margaret, a realtor, and Danforth Larter, a trucking executive. She attended Carusi Middle School and later graduated from Cherry Hill High School West during her time as a model.

Larter began her modelling career at the age of 14 when a modelling scout discovered her on the street and was asked to star in a Phillies commercial, this led to a modeling contract with the prestigious Ford Modeling Agency in New York. Larter subsequently skipped her senior year to model in Australia, Italy and Japan. She would temporarily settle in Italy at the age of seventeen.

Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Chelsea Handler!

Are you there, Chelsea?  Happy Birthday!

Handler grew up in Livingston, the youngest of six children. She was raised in Reform Judaism by her Mormon mother Rita and Jewish father Seymour. Her mother was German, and had come to the U.S. in 1958.

At age 19, Handler moved from New Jersey to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, and two years later she decided to become a stand-up comic after telling her story about a DUI to a class of other offenders, who found her story funny.

Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Tennis Pro Michael Chang!

Michael Chang was better known as a kid from California but was born here in Hoboken.

Michael Te-Pei Chang was born in 1972 to Joe and Betty Chang in Hoboken. His parents both grew up in Taiwan (though were born elsewhere) and were educated in the United States, where they met.

After moving from Hoboken, New Jersey to Placentia, California, the Changs moved again to Encinitas, California. Michael dropped out of Grade 10 at San Dieguito High School in Encinitas, California, after passing his GED in February 1988 in order to pursue a professional tennis career.

Chang is best remembered for becoming the youngest-ever male player to win a Grand Slam singles title when he won the French Open in 1989 at the age of 17.

Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Astronaut Mark Kelly!

Astronaut Mark Kelly was born in Orange today in 1964.  Along with being a decorated Naval aviator and retired astronaut, he’s also the husband of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who was shot in Arizona.

Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native John Travolta!

John Travolta celebrates his birthday today.  He was born in Englewood in 1954.

Travolta, the youngest of six children, was born and raised in Englewood. His father, Salvatore was a semi-professional American football player turned tire salesman and partner in a tire company. His mother, Helen Cecilia (née Burke), was an actress and singer who had appeared in The Sunshine Sisters, a radio vocal group, and acted and directed before becoming a high school drama and English teacher. His siblings, Joey, Ellen, Ann, Margaret, and Sam Travolta, have all acted. His father was a second-generation Italian American and his mother was Irish American; he grew up in an Irish-American neighborhood and has said that his household was predominantly Irish in culture. He was raised Roman Catholic, but converted to Scientology in 1975.

After attending Dwight Morrow High School, Travolta moved across the Hudson River to New York City and landed a role in the touring company of the musical Grease and on Broadway in Over Here!, singing the Sherman Brothers’ song “Dream Drummin.” He then moved to Los Angeles to further his career in show business.

Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Ice T!

Ice T was born (named Tracy Marrow) in 1958 today in Newark.

Ice-T was born Tracy Marrow, son of Solomon and Alice Marrow in Newark. As a child, his family moved to Summit. Solomon was an African American, and Alice was Creole. For decades, Solomon worked as a conveyor belt mechanic at the Rapistan Conveyor Company. Alice died of a heart attack when Tracy was in third grade. Solomon raised Tracy as a single father for four years, with help from a housekeeper. When Tracy was 12 years old, Solomon died of a heart attack.

Following his father’s death, Tracy lived with a nearby aunt briefly, and was sent to live with his other aunt and her husband in View Park, a middle-class black neighborhood in Los Angeles. While his cousin Earl was preparing to leave for college, Tracy shared a room with him. Earl was a fan of rock music and listened to only the local rock stations; sharing a room with him spurred Tracy’s interest in heavy metal music.

Happy Birthday, New Jersey Native Bebe Neuwirth!

Bebe Neuwirth was born in Princeton, the daughter of Russian American Sydney Anne, a painter, and German American Lee Paul Neuwirth, a mathematician. Neuwirth attended Chapin School as well as Princeton Day School of Princeton, but graduated from Princeton High School (a public school) in 1976.
