Veggie Heaven, Montclair – Review

Sometimes, you want vegetables.  Sometimes, the people you’re with don’t want vegetables.  Sometimes, you can trick the meat-eaters into eating fake meat!

OK, we didn’t go back to Veggie Heaven to trick anyone.  Instead we went back because it was really, really good food and we wanted to get some pictures for this restaurant recommendation.  There are three Veggie Heavens in New Jersey.  According to the website VeggieHeavenNJ.com, they are independently owned and operated.  We’ve only been to the Montclair site so we can’t vouch for the Denville and Teaneck locations.  However, we’ve heard good things about both other restaurants so we assume that they are all similar.

The first time we went, we weren’t too adventurous.  We basically had General’s Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice… you know, the usual Chinese-American type dishes. But, this time around, we tried some different dishes to see if their quality stood up across the menu. The stand out dish at this evening’s meal was Five Flavored Crispy Golden Eel with Spinach Noodles.

Five Flavored Crispy Golden Eel

The layers of flavor in the eel were amazing.  Salty, slightly sour and savory with the crispness of the coating made a perfect bite each time.  The sweet sauce with sesame seed garnish complemented the eel and added just the right amount of sweetness without being overpowering.  The spinach noodles were a nice bonus, too.  Normally, something this flavorful would be served with some vegetables as an afterthought. These spinach noodles made the dish extra filling and had a nice green-herbaceous taste which was a calm note after the fireworks of taste from the eel.

The Wood Pit, Montclair – Review

Generally, we try to avoid Montclair restaurants because we prefer more economical, family-friendly places to eat.  The Wood Pit, however, fits both those bills and is nestled in the upscale restaurant haven of Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair. One of our YDKJ friends told us that he’d been going here for a while and that we needed to check it out.  So, we took him up on the offer.

We tried the BBQ Sampler which has two wings, two pork ribs and sliced brisket along with two sides.

One Giant Leap For New Jersey

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy, presented to NASA and the nation a challenge – land a man on the Moon and return him safely to the Earth, before the end of the decade.

Forty-two years ago today, on July 20th, 1969, that challenge was met.

On that day, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin landed in the Sea of Tranquility with only seconds of fuel to spare. They became the first people to set foot on the moon. Fifteen minutes after Neil Armstrong exited the Lunar Module,  Buzz Aldrin descended down the ladder and into the history books.

Nuclear Energy Safety (Scare) Meeting at Montclair Library Thursday Night

The Green Party of Essex/Passaic Counties is sponsoring a discussion with three panelists about nuclear energy at Montclair Public Library tomorrow night. Unfortunately, all three panelists appear to be against nuclear energy so we’re not sure how much of a discussion it will be.  Sounds more like just an opportunity to scare people to me. Well, let’s hope for the best and try to be rational regardless.

The first participant Marilyn Elie and her group, the Westchester Citizen Awareness Network, have been actively trying to get Indian Point nuclear power plant shut down for 17 years. Second, is Sid Goodman, a professional engineer and author of Asleep at the Geiger Counter. Finally, they have Richard Webster who is an environmental enforcement engineer at Public Justice who represents citizen groups’ challenges to the NRC’s re-licensing of the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant here in Jersey.

Thursday, May 12th, 7-9 p.m.

Montclair’s Meat Locker Creates Safe Space for Teens and Music

If I were twenty years younger…  well, I’d do a lot of things differently.  But, I’d be found most weekends at the Meat Locker in Montclair, I suspect, too.

Teens Invade Their Own Space in Montclair

NJ.com introduced me to this place this afternoon and I have to admit that I’m jealous of teens right now.  On any other day I’d tell you that I’m happy to have those years behind me.  I grew up in rural Ohio where there was NO access to live music except the high school marching band on Friday night football games.

If you know young people who are looking for a safe place (there’s a no drugs and no alcohol policy with adult chaperones at the Meat Locker) and you’re anywhere near Montclair, do yourself and the young person a favor and let them know about the Meat Locker.

Montclair to Install First Public Electric Car Charging Stations in N.J.

It’s like something out of the movie Watchmen.

Montclair will be the first municipality in the state to charge up electric cars with charging stations, funded by a $25,000 grant from the Sustainable Jersey Project, which is funded by Walmart, according to a report by NorthJersey.com.

Gray Russell, the municipal environmental coordinator, said electric cars are “even more pertinent” thanks to the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. “Drivers need to wean themselves off their addiction to oil,” Russell said, “and this initiative will help.” Charging stations are scheduled be placed in the municipal parking lot at the corner of Valley Road and Bloomfield Avenue. Drivers will be able to recharge battery-powered cars, including pluggable hybrids, and charging stations will be available to both private and municipal vehicles. If additional grants come through, there may be more in other locations, Russell said.

The main reason that people shy away from buying electric-only vehicles is the fear of the battery running out and not being able to take a really long drive or vacation in them. Depending on how many towns adopt this idea, this may pave the road toward the practicality of electric cars.

Bobbi Brown and Montclair: An Article from Inside Jersey at NJ.com

Bobbi Brown in Her Montclair Studio

If you visit Montclair on a regular basis, you start to hear about celebrities who live there.  Bobbi Brown is always near the top of those lists perhaps because she’s so Pro-Montclair in a lot of articles about her.  This article in the Inside Jersey section of NJ.com is no exception.

Despite being married to a real estate developer with questionable taste and community values, Bobbi Brown remains a Montclair icon who residents are always happy to run into and talk about with out-of-towners.  The article even names her the Unofficial Mayor of Montclair.  Not a bad title to have.

Farmers Markets Start to Open Across New Jersey

Saturday marked the opening of many farmers markets in Jersey and we attended the Montclair Farmers Market at the Walnut Street Train Station.

Since most of the vegetables that are available right now are hot house lettuces and tomatoes, we focused on the ready made foods that were available and had quite a feast!
