Wildflower Earthly Vegan Fare, Millville – Review

Have you ever eaten sunshine?  No, not the molten hot actual sun.  But, fresh crisp sunshine?  We did recently at Wildflower Earthly Vegan Fare in Millville.

This wrap was so insanely fresh and delicious that I felt like the sunshine that helped these veggies grow was being mainlined right into my blood.  This is just ONE of the delicious vegan treats on the menu at Wildflower.  Behold the Hummus, Avocado and Veggie Wrap.  Wrapped up in the biggest whole wheat tortilla I’ve ever seen was hummus made from scratch, avocado, tomato, red cabbage, a spring mix of lettuces and carrot shreds. Luckily, I had friends with me would could take some of this off my hands.  I couldn’t have finished this all by myself.  Especially because gluten free apple pie was coming later!

Farm Day at Good Hand Farm in Andover

If you’re a summer reader of YDKJ, you know that we are part of an organic CSA (community supported agriculture) program. Part of being in the CSA means that you must volunteer a certain number of hours preparing the food. Last year, we took you with us as we harvested garlic. This year, we chose a cooler and less taxing chore: cutting seed potatoes.

What’s Fresh This Week at the Farmers’ Markets?

We bought a share of organic veggies and fruit from a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group based in Westfield which we share with another family because it’s a LOT of food.  Each week, we’ve shown you what we got. This is the last week of the regular shares.  Next week, we have a “stock up” delivery for an extra charge where we’ll get lots of potatoes, carrots and squash. This series of posts was our way of showing you what New Jersey farmers were offering each week and what you should have been able to find at your local farmers’ market each week. There are still a few farmers markets open out there so here’s our last post for this year.

This week we got small lettuces, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, parsnips, carrots, baby spinach, butternut squash and Japanese sweet potatoes.

This week was a very small haul.  The weird October snow really hurt the farmers up in extreme northern NJ and our farmer was no exception.  We got 2 leeks, celery root and beets, cilantro, a squash and about 1 lb of potatoes.

Next week is our LAST regular delivery.  Then, we have a stock up week of potatoes, carrots and other root veggies that will keep for a month or two into the winter.  And, then…  well, I can’t even think about another winter without my delicious local and organic vegetables.  I already miss my summer fruits.

Never tried celery root (or celeriac) before?  Me either!  Here’s what I’m going to make and bring to Thanksgiving:

This was the last week for fruit.  That’s sad.  But, I’ll drown my sorrows in white sweet potatoes!

This week weren’t at home to get our half-share.  So, our share-partner, Cathy, sent us a picture of what we would have gotten had we not gone away for a long weekend in Ohio.  (Happy Birthday, Eris!)

Here’s what she got this week: red romaine lettuce, dinosaur kale, mustard greens, dill, bok choi, carrots, onions, acorn squash and giant sweet potatoes.  Yay, the winter vegetables have started!!

This week we got a ton of food, wow!  We got apples, pears, arugula, green leaf lettuce, an onion, potatoes, peppers, broccoli, a daikon radish with the greens, turnips, Swiss chard and edamame.

I like salted edamame as a snack but sometimes it’s fun to do something different.
