Taqueria Autentica, Bloomfield – Review

When a Mexican restaurant, called Tia Maria, closed on Broad Street in Bloomfield it made this strip of road slightly less perfect. Broad Street still had its diner and ice cream classic Holsten’s, a pizza place, bagel shop, sushi and chinese, a deli and Italian and Greek restaurants.  When Taqueria Autentica decided to come in from the cold and park their taco truck on Broad Street with a brick and mortar store, the stars were brought into alignment again and all was right with this North Bloomfield dining area.

We had been swooning over their fresh, artisanal tacos for quite a while at the Montclair Farmers Market and in Newark where they parked their truck over the last few years.  But, now we don’t have to go running around to wherever they’ve parked.  We can visit any time we want! (except Monday, OK they’re not open on Monday, we can accept this…)

Taqueria Autentica brings in corn tortillas from Tortilleria Nixtamal, in NYC, which are made from fresh masa & contain no preservatives. They use locally raised, hormone & antibiotic free chicken from Goffle Road Farms in Wyckoff. Their house-made chorizo has no preservatives or unnatural ingredients. Did you read that? House. Made. Chorizo. Are you ready to head to Bloomfield yet? Plus, they have USDA Prime skirt steak, all natural pork and source local, organic produce and dairy when possible.

You simply have to go if you love tacos and tortas.  I haven’t even told you about the tortas, yet!

Movie Review – Star Wars : Episode I – The Phantom Menace In 3D

Star Wars : Episode I – The Phantom Menace opens today newly remastered in 3D. The original 3 Star Wars movies came out in 1977, 1980 & 1983. Since George Lucas had said in multiple interviews that he had 9 parts already written, everyone expected the next film to come out in 1986 following the 3 year schedule that had been established. By the time 1989 rolled around people realized that they may never see another Star Wars movie again.

Stone Horse Taverne & Grille, Belleville – Review

Back in the day, there was a place called the Zig Zag.  It was a dive but it had a good menu with a cult following. The Stone Horse took over their spot on Belleville Ave and have stepped it up a few notches.  Looking for a new place to watch the game in Essex County?  This is the place.

Movie Review – Haywire

Haywire stars Gina Carano as a kick ass action hero in an espionage thriller. Think of it as Bourne Ultimatum with a female lead. The movie co-stars Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton and Michael Fassbender in supporting roles.

Sharky’s Wings and Raw Bar, Clifton – Review

A lot of the time, when people think of the Super Bowl and food, they think of wings.  Because we like to get in the spirit of football and eating, we recently tried Sharky’s Wings and Raw Bar in Clifton because we’d heard that they were some of the best wings around.

I felt the “hot”-sauced wings could have been hotter but another diner thought they were adequately hot.  Well, I do know that as I get older, my tolerance for spicy food has gone up and I can eat hotter and hotter things without wincing.  So, maybe they were hot enough and it’s just my old taste buds.  Despite our differing opinions on the heat level of the hot sauce, we all agreed that they were some really good wings. They have lots of different flavors of sauce, too, that we’re looking forward to trying more of:  Mild, Med, Hot, Extra Hot, ON FIRE, BBQ, Teriyaki, Maryland, Blackened, Ceasar, Honey Mustard and Oriental.

Café Mavi, Summit – Review

We’ve been to Café Mavi a few times before and we went back while shopping in Summit recently. Each time we’ve been there, we’ve always had a nice light meal and the service is always very attentive.  There are many options for more substantial dinners in Summit but we like Café Mavi because they’re reasonably priced and casual.

A convenient stop for morning commuters since they’re right across the street from Summit Train Station, they have a great coffee and tea bar.  They have lots of breakfast rolls, bagels and muffins to choose from as well as heartier fare like omelettes and meal combos.  They are so popular, in fact, that they also run a breakfast stand inside the train station with a small selection of grab-and-go breakfast and coffee items.

Our most recent trip was for lunch and three of us had different sandwiches from their lunch menu. Pictured below is the Cuban sandwich which came with a nice slab of grilled ham, roast pork and swiss cheese.  Most of their sandwiches come on what they call Mavi bread which is a kind of cross between chabatta and pita bread.  I get Cuban sandwiches a lot and this spin on the classic pressed sandwich is a nice interpretation made as a lighter, less stuffed sandwich.

Movie Review – The Devil Inside

The Devil Inside is another movie about Exorcisms, and like The Last Exorcism it is filmed in the Blair Witch style. The story and acting is fairly effective. If anything, by the end it feels as though the movie should have done more.

Reservoir Tavern, Boonton – Review

We love when a family-owned restaurant is so good that it’s packed on a Wednesday night and that’s what we found at the Bevacqua’s Reservoir Tavern. They have call ahead seating, though, so you don’t have to wait with everyone else.  Rest assured, though, it’s worth the wait even if you forget to call ahead.

Yes, the pizza is as amazing as it looks in this picture.  Nice thin crust with some chewiness left in the thicker parts.  Lots of delicious and herby tomato sauce.  Excellent quality toppings that could easily be found in an entree and not just an afterthought on a pizza.  This has got to be one of the top pizzas in the state!

We got one pie with pepperoni and one with sausage.  Both were equally good and would have been a great meal by themselves.  But, of course, we tried a few more things. See what else after the More link:
