Piranha 3D (2010)

Piranha 3D is obviously a horror movie about piranha killing people. This movie goes all out and over the top to be as gory, funny, and outrageous as possible for a movie of this type. In terms of gore and nudity, this movie is everything that the Nightmare on Elm Street movie wasn’t.
This movie has basically the same plot of other piranha, shark and water based monster movies. Crowds & authorities ignore warnings, are eventually attacked and carnage ensues. The entire movie is formula, and therefore the last 30 minutes or so is extremely predictable and boring. Where the movie excels is in it’s creativity, humor and energy. There are lots of clever gory death scenes and the long nude scene is more artistic than anything else. The movie prides itself on shock value. A main character is a teenager hired to work on a boat for a ‘Girls Gone Wild’ porno director. While this lack of shame or decorum helps the entertainment value, it hurts it as a real movie. The characters are cookie cutter and lack development, and the movie has no suspense or scares at all. On the plus side, the piranha are done very well, the movie looks great in 3D, and it was nice seeing Adam Scott, a great comedic actor in a role of an intelligent capable & heroic role. And getting Richard Dreyfuss to reprise his role from Jaws is a nice touch. The movie has good points and bad, but in the end, I would have to say that it is worth seeing for the effort and energy.
One more thing: The trailer for this movie has a scene that is not in the movie. This really irritates me because it would have made fro a good scene, but I guess the makers of this movie were not smart enough to figure out how to make the scene work. Very Disappointing.
