The first Paranormal Activity was a well made and suspenseful horror movie. It was also over-hyped and seemed to get more credit than it deserved for simply being the first psuedo-documentary style movie since the Blair Witch Project to use the device to good effect. When I first saw a commercial for Paranormal Activity 2, I thought : Great, a pointless sequel doing the same thing as the first film but this time with a family. I figured that they just want to capitalize on the success of the first movie.
Despite my skepticism, I went to go see the movie anyway. I was pleasantly surprised. The movie is much in the same style as the original, made from hand-held and security type video footage. Once again the acting is decent and the suspense builds slowly. And the movie delivers some real scares. But the real beauty is in how it is linked to the original.
An important piece of advice : IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE ORIGINAL, THIS MOVIE WILL NOT MAKE SENSE. If you have seen the original, you will marvel at how brilliantly they have tied the two movies together. This movie is everything a sequel should be and more. It’s a rare sequel that gives you a better understanding of the original film, but that’s exactly what this one does. And it leaves room for another sequel as well.
It does have some weaknesses, the movie is a little slow and redundant at times and the tone is a little too light early on to exaggerate the growing suspense later. But all in all this is a very good movie and, unlike most sequels, this movie deserved to be made and is a true addition and companion to the original.
