New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has signed an executive order honoring the life of Clarence Clemons, the beloved saxophonist of Bruce Springsteen‘s E Street Band.

Clemons, who first met Springsteen in New Jersey in the early 1970s, died Saturday. His funeral was held Tuesday in Florida.

The executive order calls Clemons “a gifted musician, remarkable performer and iconic figure in New Jersey.”

Flags in New Jersey will be flown at half-staff on Thursday to memorialize Clemons’ contributions to the state.
