Rick, the owner and chef, told us while we were eating that a customer recently told him that his food was “ridiculous” and we agree. I told him that I couldn’t even talk about it when he asked me how my food was.
We checked out the Cod Almighty Chippery in Westfield last night and were blown away by everything we tried.
The soups of the day were corn chowder (crisp veggies and a little tangy with andouille sausage… are you kidding me?) and black bean soup that was the best black bean ANYTHING I’ve ever had. Along with slightly blended black beans, there were little bits of pork-y delight floating around making each bite a salty and creamy piece of heaven. I thought that would be the best thing I ate all night. Tim, the counter man, told us that he gets a bowl of the black bean soup as soon as it’s ready every time it’s made. I don’t blame him!
And then the entrees arrived.
I ordered the fish tacos and a side of macaroni and cheese. The fish in my tacos was so fresh that it was actually a little hard to find the fish taste among the spicy salsa, cabbage slaw and lettuce. No problem, however, because the total package was perfect. Super crispy veggies, hot fresh fish and a lightly grilled tortilla. The tacos were served with a cup of baked beans that wasn’t the usual gloppy sweet mess but was a little vinegary and definitely house-made with love. The macaroni and cheese (what I could eat of it, because I was stuffed!) was perfect, too. Is there anything Rick can’t do perfectly?? It tasted of real cheese and was well-seasoned. Most restaurants have the blandest mac and cheese. Cod Almighty took this side dish seriously.
We also had the Cod Almighty, which was the classic fish and chips. Another homerun! Some fish places use so much breading that you can’t taste the fish. Some batter gets soft in less than two minutes. Cod Almighty’s batter was impossible thin and impossible crispy. The fries (chips) were like boardwalk fries. Skin-on, big thick slices and cooked to perfection.
Let me talk about fried food restaurants for a moment. Most of the time when you walk in a restaurant you can smell the old oil being used. Not so, here. We smelled fish when we walked in! We even sat at the bar by the kitchen and still didn’t smell the oil. They really take care of their kitchen here. It was delightful.

Check out the Cod Almighty Chippery’s Facebook page here for daily specials and soups of the day. They also have coupon specials occasionally so you should definitely Like that page. They also have a catering menu. When you order catering, make sure you invite YDKJ because we NEED to go to the party that is serving more of their menu!
