Peanut Butter Blues Café, Allendale – Review

Update: Unfortunately, PPBC has closed.  We’re keeping the review up, though, so we can look back at those delicious sandwiches.

We were in the mood for something different for dinner one night and came across the Peanut Butter Blues Café in Allendale.  Being BIG fans of peanut butter on anything, we were intrigued.  What we found was quite a nice little restaurant which had recently opened and that had great coffee and even better PB&J sandwiches.

Godzilla and Strawberry Fields

They have a few other things on the menu, like hoagies, grilled cheese and some croissant sandwiches.  But, if you’re going here, you need to try these peanut butter creations.

Junglicious and Grilled Cheese

We tried four sandwiches on the menu and asked for a grilled cheese with peanut butter that wasn’t on the menu.  Andrew, our server, was happy to oblige our off-menu request and was pretty quick making all our sandwiches.  Each sandwich came with potato chips and a fresh strawberry which was a nice sweet touch.

First up on our walk (or is it a slog?) through all that peanut butter was the Strawberry Fields sandwich.  It had strawberry jam and peanut butter along with fresh sliced strawberries.  From now on, I’ll be wanting fresh strawberries on all my PB&Js at home.  This was a terrific spin on a classic taste.  Their “classic PB&J” has grape jelly but my classic is with strawberry jam so my sandwich was perfect.  Wow, what a great start to our dinner.

The second sandwich in our order was the Godzilla. It had peanut butter, kiwi and raspberry jam.  The kiwi added such an interesting dimension to the taste.  Wow, what a winner!

Next up was the Junglicious sandwich creation which had peanut butter, bananas, honey and cinnamon.  It felt like we were channeling Elvis on this one.  Having always heard of the peanut butter-banana combination, we were happy to see it on the menu.  But, being slightly wary of something that might have brought Elvis to an early demise, we were skeptical.  Turned out, we agreed with his tastes… this sandwich was very good. The cinnamon was a nice top note.  Another great sandwich.

We tried the grilled cheese, too.  It was nice and cheesy, toasted and not grilled, actually the way I like it best.  If I hadn’t filled up on fantastic peanut butter sandwiches, I would have wolfed this down but I ended up giving some away because my samples of the first three sandwiches were quickly filling me up.

We also recommend asking for some peanut butter on the grilled cheese.  We did, and it was good, too!

Now, before you think we just liked the food here, I should also tell you about their weekly events.  We went on Thursday which was Donkey Kong night.  The person who registers his or her name and email address and gets the top score that night on Donkey Kong gets a $10 gift certificate for your next trip to the Café.  They also have PacMan Tuesday Nights. And, watch for Frogger and Open Mic nights on their Facebook page here.

Here’s Don climbing the ladders.

We can’t wait to go back and try more peanut butter sandwiches.  Hope we see you there!
