Every other Friday, we like to go out for lunch and get some burgers. This afternoon we headed over to Madison to try out the new location of Stony’s Burgers. The original Stony’s is in South Orange and one of us had been there and liked it so we thought we’d give Madison a look and see what we all thought.
Madison’s Stony’s Burgers is in an old bank building that now houses many different businesses. It’s a neat facade for a restaurant.
Don had the burger before in South Orange so we knew we needed to try that. We also tried the hot dog and ribeye cheesesteak sandwich.
The burgers have a really nice char-broiled taste and the meat was nice and juicy. The buns are also made on a daily basis (according to the menu) and that meant they were chewy and good for soaking up the burger’s juiciness. No toppings are automatically added to the burger so you can really go crazy adding whatever you want. The free topping list is extensive—highlights include ginger mayo, three kinds of mustard, grilled mushrooms and cherry peppers. There is also a 50¢ topping list which includes bacon, three additional kinds of cheese and pineapple.
The hot dog was nice and spicy. It was grilled to perfection and put in one of their freshly baked buns. We got pushcart red onion sauce which was also good and tangy on the dog. Another winner from our order.
Finally, I ordered the ribeye cheesesteak. It was a thin piece of grilled steak with cheese and grilled onions so it wasn’t exactly what I expected. I also got the recommended cherry peppers which added a nice spice to the sandwich. All in all, the cheesesteak was good but not as great as the burger and hot dog.
Sides are either sweet potato or regular fries. Both types of fries were pretty good.
We need to go to the South Orange location, too, for a full review of Stony’s menu. In the summer, South Orange has a Seafood Shack menu but only serves it Wednesday thru Friday evenings and weekends starting at 1:00. The Fish Shack is only outside so it’s only available if the weather is nice. That menu has fish tacos, grilled clams, lobster rolls, fish of the day and shrimp with various sauces to go with the fresh seafood. We’ll be going soon because just typing FISH TACOS makes me hungry.
So, if you’re in the Madison area and craving a good burger or hot dog, try Stony’s Burgers.
