A butcher shop in Bloomfield closed several years ago and then the building seemed like it was under construction for a LONG time. The owner of the new Mes Reves French Bistro confirmed that they were indeed under construction for a very long time. They finally opened in February and now they are a huge hit. We could tell why when we visited recently.
It’s kind of unusual for us to go to a restaurant as fancy as this one. Normally, we’re more burger/pizza people. However, we can appreciate the finer touches of a true chef so we headed out to Mes Reves for our friend’s birthday.
The ambience is very french bistro and we had peeked in the windows before so we knew that we’d feel more comfortable if we dressed up a bit. Granted, we weren’t in suits and skirts but a t-shirt would have felt out of place. We emailed the restaurant for a reservation and never heard back. I forgot all about emailing them until about an hour before we were planning on showing up. So, we showed up and were able to get a seat. We were also there pretty early for dinner (6:00). If you’re planning on arriving at the height of the dinner rush, we suggest you call ahead and get a reservation. Just don’t try to email them.
Once the seating was arranged, we got down to the business of selecting our dishes. Hard to do when you want to try everything.
We ended up selecting the foie gras and sweetbreads appetizers.
Curious to try both these types of organ-meats, we couldn’t decide so we got both. The foie gras was nicely seared and had an amazing sauterne sauce. The crispy sweetbreads were flavorful and delicate. What a great way to start a meal. We were excited about the entrees!
I had the Pork Tenderloin which came with a sweet potato purée, roasted brussels sprouts and chasseur sauce. The pork was nicely cooked but could have been a little more seasoned. Luckily, the veggies and sauce were well-seasoned so I didn’t need to add anything besides the ground pepper that was offered after we got our dishes.
We also had the Pan Seared Duck Breast which came with wild rice, grilled endive and was presented with port demi sauce. What a sauce! It matched the duck perfectly and was sweet and rich. This was the dish of the evening. Luckily, it’s what the birthday honoree chose as his dish so we were all happy.
Finally, we tried the Steak au Poivre served with truffle fries. The peppercorns and sauce were excellently spicy and rich while the steak was cooked to perfection. I didn’t get to try the fries but heard that they were very good. We were all a little protective of our plates because the food was so good.
If you’re looking for a new place to try and want to go up-scale, we recommend Mes Reves in Bloomfield. Friday and Saturday along with a few other nights here and there, they have live music which we really enjoyed. The owner was extremely friendly and was willing to chat with us for a few minutes despite being obviously busy in her crowded dining room.
