Third Annual YDKJ Hot Dog Tour – Mazzi Dogz, West Orange [CLOSED]

In honor of Ed’s birthday for the last three years we’ve done a hot dog tour around NJ because he’s the biggest hot dog fan we’ve ever known.  Today’s his birthday so here’s the best place we went on this year’s tour.

Mazzi Dogz moved from Orange recently and opened up on Valley Road in West Orange.  The new space is filled with fun decorations and all the seats are within viewing range of the kitchen which we love in a restaurant.  Being able to see that most of the food isn’t pre-cooked and coming out of a plastic bag is a huge plus.

We tried a few different hot dogs and also a few other menu items to see what the rest of their offerings were like. We liked everything! The hot dogs they use have a very nice crispy snap when you bite into them and they are nicely spiced without being overpowering but that also stand up to strong toppings.

First, we had a slaw dog with cole slaw and chili and a Sour Mash dog which was (as it sounds like) sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.  I don’t know who came up with the mashed potatoes on a hot dog idea.  But, it was genius.  The potatoes add a new texture to each bite which is very satisfying.

Then, we tried the American dog with macaroni and cheese.  Wow, another great topping that you don’t see many places. This one I ordered on a whole wheat bun which turned out to be a nice hearty bun without the dryness that you sometimes get with grocery store whole wheat buns.

The three non-dog items we tried were the cheesesteak, bacon cheeseburger and chili fries.  I wasn’t thinking cheesesteak going into Mazzi’s but when I saw one being prepared, I knew I had to try it.  See?  This is why it’s good to see the kitchen from the customer area.

The steak was prepared on a flat grill along with the peppers, onions and mushrooms while the roll was toasting nearby. You don’t usually get a toasted roll with cheesesteak but it was a great addition.  Yum!

The burger and fries were equally good.  In fact, there wasn’t anything we tried that we wouldn’t eat again.

So, if you’re in the mood for hot dogs but feel like trying something new, head over to the West Orange area and get yourself some Mazzi Dogz!
