July 2013 Update: We’ve seen that the Stone Horse is renamed and appears to have changed ownership. Sorry to see it go!
Back in the day, there was a place called the Zig Zag. It was a dive but it had a good menu with a cult following. The Stone Horse took over their spot on Belleville Ave and have stepped it up a few notches. Looking for a new place to watch the game in Essex County? This is the place.
On the evening we checked it out, we started with calamari.
It was tender and crisp and the marinara dipping sauce was very nice. The breading was a little crumbly and fell apart a little too much but, hey, less carbs, right?
For our entrees, first we tried two burgers, a cheeseburger which was very good and a really good Jersey-style burger with Taylor Ham and a fried egg on top. Both burgers were nice and juicy and served on a nice hearty roll which easily stood up to the big juicy burger. The onion rings and fries sides were also good but weren’t spectacular.
We also got a bowl of chili which was phenomenal.
Filled with beef and beans, this spicy chili was topped with lots of cheddar and jack cheese and served with what seemed like freshly made tortilla chips. What a great bowl of chili for a cold winter’s night watching a Devils game on all their big screen TVs. Yum!
We can’t wait to get back to watch a game and try more entrees and Zig Zag style appetizers. Lots of things on the appetizer menu are marked with a chili pepper noting that you can order them extra hot which is Zig Zag style like the old divey Zig Zag made them. Yes, we need to try more food!
Here are all the pictures from our evening at The Stone Horse.
