Call them as soon as you read this and see if they have any reservations left this week because you should go! Heck, even if you miss Restaurant Week, you should still go. Many of the items in the special menu are also on their regular dinner menu so you can still read about what we tried and feel like you have a good idea of what you’ll see when you go. Each course in their special menu had three options. The first courses we had were Salmon Tartare and Mussels. Each dish was really fresh and excellent.
The delicious Salmon Tartare was wrapped in nori and came with mache greens and an apple vinaigrette that tasted like they were fresh from our summer organic CSA. Wow! The Mussels came with a turmeric coconut broth with garlic, basil butter and tomato confit. Those were the freshest mussels I’ve ever tasted. Amazing first course items.
For our second courses, we had the Skate Wing and a Ribsteak.
A large portion of skate came with baby arugula and a walnut vinaigrette. It was so meaty it almost wasn’t a fish. Fresh and perfectly cooked, this was a winner for a second course.
Our ribsteak was delicious but a little fatty (I know, what should I have expected?). It was very well seasoned and actually arrived pretty rare like I ordered it. Many restaurants are afraid to go really rare so this was a treat. The steak came with Squirrel Nuts which are a house specialty. Yeah, they’re that good. They’re basically the creamiest mashed potatoes you’ve ever had mixed with cheese and somehow made into balls. I would like to know how these are made… but then again, maybe I’d just like to keep believing they’re just magic.
Finally, for dessert we had a Three Dirt Tasting plate and a chocolate souffle.
I’ve never tasted dirt but I will from now on if this is what it’s like. According to their menu, the flavors change monthly so you might get something different when you go but we got what we can only describe as a coffee-spice cake flavor which was very different and fascinating, a chocolate one which was good but predictable and a strawberry one which was a complete stunner. That strawberry cream with graham cracker-y dirt was amazing.
The items we didn’t try from their special menu were Mushroom Tempura, Chicken with Polenta and Creme Brulee. We spied some of these dishes on other people’s tables and nothing looked disappointing so we’re sure they were all good, too.
