Did you know that Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and North Wildwood beaches need to be unlocked before anyone can even go near the water? We saw some sun-bathers on the beach and swimmers in the water and were tempted to haul them up to the boardwalk but resisted.  The Annual Unlock the Ocean event takes place every year just before Memorial Day and this year’s ceremony was held just one day after being voted NJ’s Top Beach by visitors to the NJ Sea Grant Consortium’s website.

Miss America, Wisconsin’s Laura Kaeppeler,  and Harlem Globetrotter Blenda Rodriguez (a Bergen Community College graduate!) were on hand with many Wildwoods dignitaries and representatives of the United States Coast Guard to help stick the giant key in the sand and get the season started. It was a very fun way to open the summer season at the Wildwoods Convention Center. It was a beautiful day to be on the beach!

While the unlocking event was unfolding, Wildwood’s International Kite Festival was happening all around us.  Kites were being flown all over the beach and even in the middle of the crowd.  Miss America even got in on the kite-flying action, as seen above.

The Wildwood High School band provided shore-themed music to accompany the unlocking ceremony.

So, now that the beaches are open, why not comes down and enjoy the award-winning beaches of Wildwood, North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest?
