How hard is it to improve your economic status and move up the economic ladder from poor to middle class to rich? It could depend on what state you live in according to a newly released study.

The study looked at mobility prospects of workers aged 35-39 from 1978-1997 and then checked back with them 10 years later.

3 measures were used :

1. Absolute Mobility – Residents’ average earnings growth over time.

2 & 3. Relative Mobility upward and downward – Residents rank on the earnings ladder relative to their peers as well as upward or downward movement along that ladder.

New Jersey, New York & Maryland were the only 3 states to have better mobility on all 3 measures.
