Maurizios Pizzeria & Italian Grill, Neptune – Review

We were in Asbury Park a few weeks ago and since it was National Pizza Month, we figured we’d check out one of the Maurizio’s Pizzeria locations since we’ve heard good things about them.  We heard right!

Normally, when you see the line up of pies along the counter it’s not a great sign.  But, these pizzas were really fresh-looking and had great topping combinations.  We tried three different slices and each was better than the next.  You can see the plain slice up above.  The cheese was good quality and you can see lots of oregano on top for a nice spicy kick. The sauce was pretty sweet and the crust was really thick and chewy.  Overall, a nice plain slice.

My favorite piece was the eggplant cutlet and ricotta cheese slice.

The eggplant was lightly breaded and fried.  There was lots of ricotta which I loved.  Plenty of sauce and this crust was a little crispier and thinner.  All the slices we had that day were very big slices, too.  Again, this piece was very herb-y and tasted great.  I liked that it wasn’t just a regular slice with some eggplant covered by a bunch of mozzarella.  The toppings really stood out and made a great bite throughout the slice due to the large number of eggplant slices and big dollops of ricotta.

Ed’s favorite slice was the stuffed sausage, peppers and onion slice.

It came with marinara dipping sauce.  There were lots of chunks of sausage and the perfect proportion of peppers and onions.  Sometimes, places try to cut corners by loading up on peppers and onions while skimping on the protein.  Not Maurizio’s.  the crust was chewy and thin and didn’t overwhelm the stuffing.

If you’re in the mood to try a few slices of different kinds of pizza, you should definitely check out one of the Maurizio’s locations.  We went to Neptune but they are also in Eatontown, Jackson and Mays Landing.

Don’t let the strip mall look fool you, either.  The dining room is spacious and well-appointed.
