Fifty-Three Band Names and Several Subject Areas That Will Get a DJ from Seton Hall’s WSOU Suspended if Discussed

Here’s something that’s pretty far off the beaten track for us at YDKJ.  But, it’s an interesting document shedding light on the juxtaposition of a modern Catholic university and its student-run heavy metal radio station here in New Jersey.  Please note that the image in this post contains words that are adult in nature and would not be suitable to click on at work if your company has a strict internet usage policy or if you’re at home and there are kids reading along with you.

Perusing Reddit can be eye-opening, in a variety of different ways, but it’s a pretty interesting rabbit hole to dive into every once in awhile to see what you can find.  Among the items a few weeks ago, there was this JPG of a list presumably posted in the WSOU station offices at Seton Hall.

The document is a list of band names that its DJs can’t say over the air.  Seton Hall’s WSOU is a heavy metal student radio station that plays some of the screamiest, loudest music you can find on the FM dial.  Incongruous as it is for a Catholic university to have this very metal station, it also has Seton Hall sports coverage now and then.  It’s college radio at its finest.

Clearly there are two factors at play in this list.  One, there are things you just can’t say over the air for FCC decency reasons and, two, there are also things that the church doesn’t want you to discuss over the airwaves that it’s paying for.  You can tell they’ve had meetings discussing how far into the hard-core metal their student DJs can go and they’ve put a lot of thought into this.  The overall theme is at the top of the list saying, “Anything with Devil, Satan, God, Jesus or any other Catholic references that are portrayed in a negative light should not be discussed over the air.”  But, that line is followed with, “But here is a list for your own personal enjoyment.”  They know that this list is going to make everyone laugh because they’re college students and they’re programmed to laugh at this kind of thing.  But, college officials are also concerned enough about where to draw the line with this music to have to make up a list in the first place.

Now, before you click on the list to enlarge it, be aware that the band names are clearly NSFW if they can’t be mentioned over the air.
