South Jersey gets their first Smashburger restaurant today and a unique Philly area burger along with it called the Liberty Burger. It has grilled onions, Cheez Whiz and Gulden’s Mustard on a pretzel bun. As you can see, the onions are drowned in just the right amount of Cheez Whiz. This burger is amazing.  Along with the local New Jersey Burger that we’ve tasted in northern New Jersey and is pictured farther down below, Smashburgers in south Jersey will have this Philly area Liberty burger.

I’ve been to Smashburger countless times but until yesterday I had never tried the Veggie Frites, probably because I am not thinking about vegetables when I am ordering burgers and fries. Veggie Frites are flash-fried carrots and green beans. These really surprised me. They are sweet and seasoned and have a great flavor as well as actually tasting like vegetables at the same time. This is a great accomplishment where I have seen many other places fail, the Apple Fries at Burger King come to mind as one example.

You can get regular fries at Smashburger but the Smash Fries are the perfect creation, a subtle but effective enhancement of french fries. They are tossed with rosemary, olive oil and garlic and I always get these instead of regular fries.

The pickles were so popular in the sandwiches that they came up with the idea of making them into a side. These Fried Pickles are served with buttermilk dressing.

Smashburger’s signature is the way they prepare their beef. They call it ‘smashing’ and the result is a juicy, salty and seasoned flavor. Every time I have a smash burger I am amazed at how powerful and perfect the taste is. Above we got a demonstration of just how the burger is prepared.

This is the Smash Classic. It consists of American Cheese, smash sauce, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion on an egg bun. You can choose this, or from a variety of styled burgers such as the Liberty or New Jersey and they are all customizable with ingredients, buns and even patties.

Here is our namesake local burger, the New Jersey burger. You will find Applewood-smoked bacon, blue cheese, grilled onions, haystack onions, lettuce, tomato and mayo on an onion bun. This is a big and bold burger.

Maybe you are in the mood for chicken instead of beef. Here is the Grilled Chicken Avocado Club. Made with fresh avocado, applewood-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing and mayo on a multi-grain bun.

In addition to grilled chicken, they have fried chicken sandwiches as well. This is the Crispy Chicken Buffalo. It has Frank’s RedHot Buffalo sauce, crumbled blue cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo on an egg bun.

If you are not a carnivore or are looking for something more healthy, Smashburger also serves salads. Above you see the Harvest, a mix of fresh greens, balsamic tomatoes, raisins, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and blue cheese topped with balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

And if you’re not too full, you can finish the meal with a Milkshake. Or you can eat it before or with the meal which I know some people do, but I personally find that too heavy so for me it has to wait till the end. This is a Haagen-Dazs Nutter Butter Milkshake.
