Chase, Trenton Thunders’ Bat Dog, Has Died

By the time we met Chase this spring, it already seemed like he was in semi-retirement. He’d been the Bat Dog for the Trenton Thunder for eleven years and it was more than time to pass on the job to his son, Derby. But, Chase still liked to soak up the spotlight, it seemed, just like he also soaked in the warm spring sunshine. He spent most of his time on the field during warmups in the position you see below. Laying in the beautiful warm grass, getting his picture taken and receiving pets from various Thunder staff members.

Sadly team officials announced that Chase has passed away at the age of 13.

Last week, we learned that due to his declining health the Trenton Thunder held a retirement party for Chase by inviting fans to bring their own dogs to the park, having a bobblehead giveaway of Chase, giving him one last attempt at a getting a bat which sadly he wasn’t able to do. A beautiful video collage from was played at the ceremony.

“Chase was such a tremendous part of the Trenton Thunder identity for more than 10 years,” said Thunder General Manager Will Smith. “His presence at Arm & Hammer Park or in the community was the epitome of the wholesome family entertainment for which we strive.”

His son, Derby (below), takes the reins as Bat Dog now but we’ll never forget how Chase stole our hearts.

Rest in peace, Chase. We know there are lots of bats and balls out there to get wherever you are!

The team requests that instead of flowers or gifts being sent to the stadium, mourners and fans of Chase can donate to the Trenton Thunder Charities or to your local animal rescue group.
