October is National Pizza Month and when we asked for pizza recommendations, our friends from the band Killed the Fixtion and their manager, Rigo Asencio, suggested that we try the Sicilian slice from Nino’s in Harrison. If you haven’t heard of Killed the Fixtion, you should definitely check out their music and you should also head over to Nino’s for an excellent square pie. It’s extremely convenient to downtown Newark so if you’re headed to NJPAC or Prudential Center this would be a great place to stop before you go.
The crust on this pie was unbelievably light and airy. That was the most surprising thing about it. How could something so substantial and thick be so light? The sauce was really sweet and was easily made less so with the addition of oregano and chili flakes from the shakers on the table. The cheese was applied with a really light touch which we also liked.
Good call, Rigo and Killed the Fixtion. Keep on rockin’!
The restaurant is really nicely decorated inside and it’s easy to find from the street.
We also tried the calamari appetizer and it was also very good. It was so lightly breaded that it was almost not noticable. Very interesting twist on the usual super-breaded rings. I liked them dipped in the same sweet-tasting sauce as the pizza sauce. I liked the sauce even more after I added some chili flakes.
Go check out Nino’s and celebrate the end of National Pizza Month by having some really great Sicilian pizza!
