Everyone knows the odds of winning the lottery are bad, but they just got a whole lot worse! In the case of the Mega Millions, they have just gone from 1 in 176 million to 1 in 259 Million. To put those numbers in perspective, the odds of winning the Pick 6 are 1 in 14 Million and the Cash 5 is relatively easy to win at 1 in 658,000. You would have to by almost 400 Mega Millions tickets to have the same odds of winning that you get from purchasing just 1 Cash 5 ticket.
No one has won since the new odds were put in place so tonight it is at $586 million. A guaranteed winner will only happen for sure if all 259 million possibilities are purchased and that is very unlikely. Plus many people who are choosing their own numbers and not buying randomized tickets will wind up with the same combinations as other prospective winners. All of this means that we could see the Mega Millions possibly top $1 Billion and set new all-time records. Of course for all of this to happen there have to be fewer actual winners.
