When you can see the abuela in the kitchen making your meal, you know you’re in for a treat! That’s exactly what we saw at El Matador Mexican Deli in Bloomfield.

I mean, really, this soup was just crazy good.  A little bit spicy and chock full of big chunks of veggies, potatoes and meat.

We tried one of each kind of taco filling just because it all sounded good.  Each meat was well-spiced and nice and juicy.  Fillings seemed to vary both times we stopped by so there appears to be rotating meat options depending on when you go.  The owner has always been more than happy to tell us what they have that day and what the specials are.

One of my favorite dishes is a great torta.  Breaded beef or chicken in a big soft bun and topped with avocado, beans, cheese and veggies.  These are great.

The second time we stopped by we came for breakfast and both got the huevos rancheros.  Nicely poached fresh eggs with creamy refried beans, salsa verde and spicy red sauce all on the best fresh tortillas I’ve had in a very long time. After announcing to Muchio that the red sauce wasn’t TOO spicy, he presented us with some super hot sauce which was, indeed, nice and hot.  They also have a sauce that’s so hot they call it La Muerte.  We weren’t brave enough to try it.
