It’s National Burger Month so we had to check out the new fast casual burger chain that recently moved into the Garden State. The Counter has numerous locations out west but the store in Clifton is the first here in New Jersey.
The idea of this burger chain is that you can build your own burger from a very long list of toppings. Most of the toppings are free and there are also premium items that are an additional upcharge. The burgers start out pretty expensive (for burgers) so we limited ourselves to the free toppings. The burger up top was on a pretzel bun with lettuce, red onions and pickles. We thought, overall, the burgers were good but too expensive to not be really fantastic. There is a full bar at The Counter so if you like to drink while you eat, this could be a good place to check out.
I tried the turkey burger which ended up being really nice and moist. I got brie cheese, sliced hard-boiled eggs, mixed greens and jicama on a brioche bun. The turkey burger is the same price as the beef patty.
The last burger we tried had ham slices, onion confit and spinach on it. We asked for peanuts (which are available as a topping) to be put on the side because we weren’t sure how that would taste. It ended up being hard to keep them on the burger so they were simply eaten as a side.
As part of the burgers, you got a choice of one sauce or a flight of three sauces for $0.75. We got lots of sauces and used them to dip our fries. We really liked all the sauces!
Red relish, horseradish aioli, apricot, Thai peanut, sweet Sriracha, honey dijon and chipotle aioli were all delicious and tasted good on both regular and sweet potato fries.
The decor is modern with lots of seating options like booths and different sized tables.
If you’re really into celebrating National Burger Month or are in the Clifton area and like to try all the new burger places out, get over to The Counter and check them out. They are open every day and open VERY late so would be a good option if your hungry for something better than a diner.
